Notice
Before you post into this thread please read all the information at these links I post below. If you have any further questions please contact Staff directly by using this link. http://en.support.wordpress.com/contact/

In a nutshell free blogs from and being free hosted by wordpress.COM cannot be used to drive traffic to third-party sites by means of advertising and/or affiliate programs. E-commerce cannot be conducted on wordpress.COM blogs. No retailing or reselling the work created by anyone other than yourself is allowed.

Affiliate marketing blogs
The only exceptions with regard to affiliate links are found here:

Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes (“Make six figures from home!!”, “20 easy steps to top
profits!!”, etc). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and pyramid schemes. To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category. http://en.wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

Advertising
I am sorry, but advertising is not allowed on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. The only exceptions are for high traffic blogs that qualify for and are accepted into the Ad Control program, and very high traffic blogs that qualify and are accepted into the paid VIP hosting program.
http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/
http://vip.wordpress.com/

If you require advertising and/or affilate libnks on your blog, you can hire a web host and get a free software install from http://wordpress.org In that case, please see the information at the link below to learn about the differences between free hosted WordPress.com blogs and WordPress.org software installs for self hosting. http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Wow. Am very glad I read all of this. I have joined a site where you set up a blog just for the purpose of being able to advertise and use your affliate links. They say at that site they can hook up (for lack of a better word) my blog post from that site to my blog here at WP. If my blog is basically just full of information on companies that I am promoting (which is against the rules here) how can they forward my post to my WP blog? If I did that would my blog here get banned? I would also like to know, does anyone ever check to make sure that spelling is correct and that their sentences are worded properly before submitting? It drives me crazy. I am definitely doing my homework on proofreading sites and am thinking about offering my services. Thank you

OK I skimmed through this whole thing, and am still confused! Here is the excerpt on advertising:

"In addition to AdSense-type ads, please do not use the following services on your blog: sponsored / paid posts including PayPerPost, ReviewMe, and Smorty; affiliate / referral links to the following domains: usercash, clickbank, clickhop, cashrocks, payingcash; clicktrackers (and any similar) and any promotion of the “I made a million on the internet and so can you” type of advertising (i.e. MLM, network marketing, cash gifting, etc.). Paid or sponsored post content is also prohibited. Please check our page on types of blogs for more information about what content is and isn’t welcome on WordPress.com."

Affiliate links to clickbank, cashrocks, etc are not permitted. I get that. But if I am writing a blog post about a baby shower party theme and put links to amazon products that would work along with my theme, are those allowed to be affiliate links? It doesn't mention amazon in the list of things not allowed.

Take a deep breath and don't worry. Your Adsense didn't get posted on your WordPress.com blog: that is an ad from Adsense that WordPress.com itself applied to your blog.

They run adsense on our blogs which shows primarily to people coming from searches, and to not-signed-in-to-WP.com people. Your regulars won't see the ads, you normally won't, and people who are signed in to WP.com won't see them. WordPress.com is one of Adsense's biggest customers.

If you don't want the ads, you can buy the Ad Free upgrade, and if you DO want ads and have 1000 hits a day or so, you can apply for a new program which allows you to control ads on your site.

I tried to log in to my adsense account but it says "application pending". I don't see how it could be pending if it is showing up on my page. Anyways, i just wanted to find out where I need to go in wordpress to delete the ad. I don't want my account to be suspended!! You can link from my ning to wordpress, so maybe that is how the glitch happened? I am so confused.

If your blog qualifies (around 50K views a month), you can now signup for Skimlinks via WordPress Ad Control. It turns all your links into affiliate links (where applicable) and you split your profits 50/50 with WordPress. So WordPress is allowing monetization now for the blogs with high traffic.
