Thanks for your help. All of our blogs are wordpress.com hosted, so I don't think Jetpack is needed. We've simplified things a bit since my original post I think:

I have created a new blog:

A. http://minimalistamama.wordpress.com

and imported all of the content from the following 3 blogs:

B. http://minimalistmama.wordpress.com
C. http://minimalistmamagifts.wordpress.com
D. http://minimalistmamaexpecting.wordpress.com

We would like all of the likes and followers (and, if possible, anything else that isn't included in a WP XML export file) from blogs B, C and D to be redirected to blog A (http://minimalistamama.wordpress.com).

We are ready to do that migration now -- is there anything more you need from us?

Thanks for the quick reply. Does that redirect work for both followers and "likes"? That is, if 10 people "liked" one of the posts on the old blog, will those get transferred to the new blog?

We have 3 related blogs:

We would like to merge these all into the first blog (http://minimalistmama.wordpress.com/). I have tested this out using wordpress.com's import/export functionality in a separate test blog (4th blog) and have worked out the kinks for fixing URL links etc.

We are also contemplating buying the site redirect upgrade to automatically direct traffic from minimalistmamagifts.wordpress.com and minimalistmamaexpecting.wordpress.com to their new homes.

What happens to the likes and followers for those two blogs? Will the import/export or the site redirect automatically migrate them as well?

Yes, this would be great to see. If there is something half-way close that I could use as a starting point I'd probably be motivated to give it a shot and see how close I can get with a clean CSS-based solution. Any pointers?

A one word answer to similar theme is "no". The only themes we can use on this free hosted by wordpress.com blogging platform are found here > Appearance > Themes. There are about 80 or so of them.

Alternately, has anyone used the Sandbox theme + custom CSS to effectively produce a fluid 3-column layout like this?

I don't know and there is no "archives" of CSS skins that have been created.

I'm willing to pay premium for this, but AFAIK the premium package doesn't give you additional themes.

As I said above the only themes we can use on free hosted blogs are located here > Appearance > Themes . The only exceptions are very high traffic blogs that have been accepted into VIP hosting. http://vip.wordpress.com/

I'm currently maintaining a Movable Type blog for my fiance, and the overhead is getting beyond the point where I can keep up. So I'm looking to move to a simpler solution, and have been wanting to give WP a try for a while. I would much prefer going the hosted route and use WordPress.com, but right now I don't think the available themes would let me get even close to the current site design. The current design has a fluid width center column, and 2 fixed width margins on either side with widgets.
