You're talking about a blog that is WordPress.org, not WordPress.com. You need to be over there to get help with that; we can't add external themes to a WordPress.com blog.

I have uploaded news themes via FTP to the proper folder: wp-content/themes

When I went to my Admin page under Appearances - I do not see the new themes listed. I see my current one but no others.

I went back and double checked my FTP files on my server to make they were proper placed. They are where they should be. They are all there. I checked the boards for any similar issues and saw people with issues that their Theme wasn't working and were told they have to 'activate' the theme before it works. This I know. But I cannot see the Themes on the sidebar under Appearances to begin with in order to activate it.

Does anyone know why they wouldn't show up or how would I proceed to rectify this? Where do I go from here basically. Thank you kindly.

No, simply mapping a new domain name to a Wp.com blog doesn't lose you the benefits of WP.com. What it does do is start from zero in terms of pagerank, etc, and it'll have to build from there. If your old PR was 5, you're at 0 or 1 now. After not too long, though, you'll get back to either where you were or close. Linkbait as much as possible (ie post stuff that people want to link to) to make it happen faster.

Hopefully this is not a silly question. I recently purchased a domain name and mapped it to my WordPress blog. Does this affect any traffic directly from WordPress that I had before? Meaning am I out of the WordPress loop in regards to getting traffic from WP itself now that I'm simply a dot com? Will this affect how google recognized me before to now? Thank you in advance for your answers.

No, not at all.

The use of FTP, plugins, external themes, advertising, etc, etc has nothing to do with any upgrades available at WordPress.com. They cannot be used at WordPress.com, period, outside the VIP program ($600 per month and up).

To use those, you need to get an externally hosted blog, not a domain. You need to find a web host and buy some hosting from them, upload software from WordPress.ORG in the webspace, and go from there.

This will clarify the differences:

After I registered my domain with a host (not WP) and I changed the DNS and directed it to WP....I read the following about Domain Mapping on WP:

Before Upgrading

The Domain Mapping Upgrade does not enable the permission to use advertising, any kind of prohibited code, or upload additional themes and plugins. With the upgrade, your blog will still be hosted here at WordPress.com, which means that you will not have FTP access to your files and must still abide by our Terms of Service accordingly.

OKAY. So what I get from this is...that because I have a domain name somewhere else besides WP, I cannot utilize any FTP's and I cannot install plug-ins, themes etc.

Does this mean EVERYONE who does upload themes and plugins has gotten a domain from WordPress? I don't think so. So how do I get FTP enabled for WordPress? Is there another feature that I have to buy? Please help. Thank you.
