If I just want to show excerpts on the first page, the formatting doesn't work anymore and the blockquotes are huge and bold.

It's as though there is no formatting on my main page and then on my other pages, everything is huge and bold. Nothing I do has helped-- I've tried working in the html view when writing posts and I've tried adding suggested fixes to my CSS (I have the CSS upgrade). Nothing works. Help!
