How does it map it if the titles change? i.e. My post URIs were very long on WP.com and my new selfhosted blog shortened the slug so it's not a direct crossover?

If you look at the support doc for the site redirect, it does specifically say that

Note: The site redirect upgrade will not work for URLs that do not have the same permalink structure as your posts on WordPress.com.

You only need the redirect if you didn't use a custom domain while on WordPress.com. If you used one, all you need to do is change the nameservers, which is presumably at no cost. That's one reason we always recommend the custom domain from the start.

It's my experience that it will take about 3 - 4 months time for the reindexing to happen. When it does the site will have the same page rank and authority that was previously evidenced.

This topic is also of interest to me. So, if I understand things correctly, I have to pay $12 ongoing to maintain a redirect from my old wordpress.com pages to my self hosted version. That has got to be one of the only scenarios where I get free service with a company and then have to pay to do business elsewhere. Smart WP. Smart. And $12 is more than a domain name.

So, just so I "get it", when I put that redirect in place it's from specific blog post to its corresponding counterpart on the new blog? How does it map it if the titles change? i.e. My post URIs were very long on WP.com and my new selfhosted blog shortened the slug so it's not a direct crossover? I have a blog who's wp.com redirects go to many 404s.

And on the matter of checking to see if the "juice" passed though, I think that you'd need to wait a while to determine what Google thinks about the switch, they have to crawl all the old pages again in order to for the transfer of juice to be complete.

@macmanx, as per Jane's announcement

Purchasing the Offsite Redirect upgrade will take the traffic coming to your old wordpress.com blog and forward it to your new domain so that links to your old content won’t break and you won’t take an SEO hit as a result of your move.

contradicts that and I'm not sure that SEOmoz is Google specific.

Regardless, @cognitionetc-did you keep the same link structure as before? That can have an influence.

It is a 301 redirect, and it is working properly.

Everything is as it should be on this end, but we unfortunately have no control over how Google chooses to operate their index.

Hi, thanks. Yeah, I've seen several official posts stating it is a 301 redirect, which I why I paid for it. As you can see though, the essential search ranking stats just haven't transferred over. It could just be an error in this particular case which wordpress need to sort out.

So I paid for the site redirect upgrade to redirect my old blog cognitionetc.wordpress.com to my new wordpress.org site, cognitionetc.com. The actual redirect works fine, i.e. going to any place on my wordpress.com blog redirects to my new site. The problem I'm having is that I've apparently lost all my search engine ranking stats. My pagerank has gone from 3 to 0 and my page authority has gone from 32 to 1. I measured this using Open Site Explorer: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org. This looks to me like the redirect isn't a 301 redirect, which I thought I was paying for. I've messaged wordpress.com support but no one's responded to me. Not happy about this at all.

Hi,

I recently purchased my domain and redirected my lisamariec.wordpress.com to lisa-mariecunningham.com. The domain section tells me this is active but I am now receiving rel canonicals for the http pages, for example: http://lisa-mariecunningham.com/2011/10/06/gallagher-pulls-brand-in-for-cameo-video-appearance/

I am also receiving 404 errors for the related http pages, for example: http://lisa-mariecunningham.com/2011/10/28/the-vaccines-new-video-wetsuit-is-the-first-instagram-video/instagr.am/

How do I fix this? Do I purchase the redirect and redirect from http://lisa-mariecunningham.com to the non http version: lisa-mariecunningham.com?

We don't want to lose the search engine rankings for the site. Will the 301 Redirect work and save rankings if it doesn't have exact posts to redirect to?

The page rank and the authority earned by the original URLs belongs to those URLs. If one does not purchase a site redirect or domain mapping then every one of those links will be broken and return a 404 (page not found) when visitors click them. If we do purchase them then our visitors are seamlessly directed between URLs. Within a 4 - 6 month period of time, all things considered, the new site URLs will be re-indexed and the result will be the same authority and same page rank.

Well yes, that is the correct 301 Redirect mentioned, but as you can see there is not very specific information provided that answers the questions above. (re: losing page rankings for blog posts if they haven't been transferred to the new domain/hosting yet)

I am moving a WordPress.com blog to a different platform, but transferring the blog posts will take time so we've decided to repurpose them for future posts. Thanks to all of you! Here is the final answer, I guess the others might be interested in it, too.

wp.COM Site Redirect is 301 redirection. Great!

But what about search engines and other services that access the old example.wordpress.com links? Up until now, WordPress.com would send those services a 302 redirect which would tell them that a link had a new temporary home, and to go index that new link, but to not forget about the original one.

Today we have changed 302 redirects to 301 redirects. A 301 redirect tells search engines the new link has moved permanently, and they can discard the old links.

That's a great news, so I can mark this as resolved.

I thought that I had read that the return was a "moved permanently" but I can't find the reference - I have a hard time thinking that the sharp people here would do some sort of spam redirect.

I do not now whether Site Redirect uses 301 redirection or meta redirection. DO YOU KNOW?

There is a hudge difference. 301 saves all Google ranks; meta redirection can be much less effective and also flaged as spam.

301 redirect is the best method to preserve your current search engine rankings when redirecting web pages or a web site. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".

With a meta redirect the page with the redirect issues a 200 OK status and some other mechanism moves the browser over to the new URL. With a 200 OK on both pages, the search engine wants to index both the start page and the target page - and that is a known spam method.

I'm moving from wp.COM to wp.ORG. I'd like to save my rankings so would like to implement the 301 redirect by creating a .htaccess file.

Is there a way to perform that on wp.COM? I don't have root access, so I don't see a way. :(

A client of mine has two blogs at WordPress.com. We want to move them to her own domain under WordPress.org.

I expect that's not hard to do, but the problem is the incoming links to the present blogs. Can we apply 301 permanent redirects from the old WordPress.com blog pages to the new locations under her own domain? We don't want to lose the link popularity of her blogs and don't want all the incoming links to suddenly generate 404 Page Not Found errors.

If you did a 301 redirect, the search engines will see that and in 3-6 months all of your ranking should transfer over to the new domain name.

That said, Google has made a lot of changes in the last 6 months and it has ended up damaging the ranking on legitimate high ranking sites. I've got one client that dropped from 5/10 down to 2/10 and the site is NOT spammy or sploggy. It is a legitimate business site.

Basically Google has ended up throwing some of the babies out with the bathwater.

There are many out there carrying pitchforks and torches looking for Larry Page and Matt Cutts. It won't be pretty if they find them.
