I've gone ahead and fixed the domain mapping issue from our end so it'll point to http://ryanclements.wordpress.com/ properly. (I've just tested it from my end, and it's good to go.)

In Store -> Domains, you can choose your primary domain (which is what users will see when they visit your blog).

If you don't map a domain to your free wp.com blog, then you'll have to pay someone to host it yourself. Just buying a name does not make it available anywhere on the net. You can't link to it.
