If you don't have a username account at WordPress.ORG click http://wordpress.org/support/ and register one on the top right hand corner of the page that opens, so you can post to the support forums there and receive advice from WordPress.ORG bloggers.

I found that the answer is Edit your index file and replace the_content with the_excerpt. Stepping_Into_Template_Tags

The tutorial and customizations you mentioned (such as adding a flash banner) are things you can do with a WordPress.org setup because it gives you complete control over the code. It sounds like that would be the best solution for you if you want to get in and tinker with the code.

I have been looking through wordpress/and the menu tree's to find the answer for hours and it's been futile. It looks nothing like what has been advertised for "free."

I am totally confused and exasperated. Please Help!!!
