I would prefer it if you didn't have to right click to download, I just want it to download when you click on the image or a button that says download. Is this possible with wordpress.com or would it be a wordpress.org function?

It's easy. You just need to add the instructions "Right click, save as to download."

Hi all, thank you so much for your help. With your suggestions I have managed to add a jpg file to a post along with a click here to download but it then takes you to another browser displaying the image rather than downloading to the users computer, I'm not sure if it is even possible to do this on wordpress.com so let me know if I'm trying to do something too advanced.

You're right raincoaster, plugins don't work here, i slipped reading the ".com" in two posts actually, had reached here from some search results. Phew!.. My bad, the guru's safe :)

Secondly about SlideShare being better for SEO, was just compared to Scribd or GDocs (mentioned by timethief). Of course, hosting your file yourself gives you much better control over SEO and hence a better result.

Uh, no. Plugins cannot be used at WordPress.com. And Slideshare has far less SEO than hosting the document yourself. Where are you getting your information? Fire your guru.

Just upload the whatever-it-is, and put it in your blog as a Thumbnail or text "Download" or whatever with a link to the full size file.

Can't say I've understood your end goal here, but if you want to manage, track and control file downloads from your wordpress site, this is the plugin/functionality you're looking for.

If we're talking about document embedding services you can use SlideShare as well, it's better for your website's SEO as far as I know.

Re size, when you use files that are larger than the required dimensions
a) You waste storage space.
b) You increase the loading time of your page.
c) You get worse quality (images downsized by WP lose some color and sharpness).
d) The theme automatically downsizes the image to make it fit the area you put it in, but some bad browser versions don't understand this: depending on the theme and the browser, the image may show up distorted or in its original size (cropped or not).
So, timethief's first reply is incorrect but the rest are correct. For best results and no browser issues, the ideal is to use an image editing application to downsize a copy of the image to the appropriate pixel width, then upload and use that copy. The width of the sidebar in Greyzed is 235 pixels.

As for the URLs, you upload the image via Media > Add New, and once it's uploaded you click Edit and copy the File URL from the Save module: that's the URL you need in an image widget.

No, it doesn't really depend on the image size (but more on this later).
The Image widget doesn't work because you didn't use the image URL, you used the URL of an attachment page (with the image on it). Image URLs always end with the filetype extension (.jpg or .png etc).
You used this:

Prior to uploading any image into your blog, regardless if it’s a header image, a featured image, an image in a post or page, in a Post format (Gallery or Image), an image for sidebar display in an image widget or a text widget, you can optimize and re-size it in either free desktop image editing software or online image editing software to fit the space you intend to use it in.

I tryed to do everyhting as indicated. I pasted the Image URL in the box. But when I go to my blog I just see a blank space. The image does not appear. I don't know why that is.

I had already uploaded it, but I did it again since it didn't appear in my blog. But it didn't work either.

Hi again,
I plan displaying a lot of statistical data, graphs, arrows and explanatory text. Since I do a lot of PPT's I have been used to modify any graphic content so as to be more pedagogical.
In WP, do I have to convert all my graphics in PS and then add it to WP or is there an easier way to import spreadsheets, graphs etc.

I have an Excel file of a tree list using rows & columns that I want to use as a page. Is there away to cut and paste it while keeping the proper formatting? If I convert the file to a pdf then a jpg, will it be large enough to view?
