1) a. You cannot delete the current default category. If that's the category you wish to delete, you must first go to Settings > Writing and set a different default category.
b. Categories and tags are the same data actually, so there's absolutely no point using the same word or phrase as both a tag and a category, plus it can lead to technical problems.
2&3) You can add as many menu items as you like, including dropdowns. For details on custom menus see this post of mine:
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/
On wordpress.com blogs you cannot use plugins.
4) Only if you have the Custom Design upgrade.
5) As far as I know, not possible on wordpress.com.

Hello!
Ive had my wordpress site for a while and there are a few things I would like to change
1) for some reason I cannot delete catogories?
2) and I cant add any more menu tabs? (is this theme related perhaps?)
3) How do I program it so that when I have all the menu tabs I wont they can have drop down catogories - would this plugin be compatible
http://archive.plugins.jquery.com/project/jQueryMenu
4) is it possible to have the main theme on the homepage and then when you click on another tab it is a different background?
5) I want to animate the mouse on the top picture so that it'comes alive' and follows the cursor as you scroll down the page- I understand that my drawings would have to be coverted into vector graphics and then animated but im not sure what to do after that, is it then embedded using the customization tools? and would i be able to do different animations for different tabs as i want to make one nightime theme and have glowing flowers (not sure how to do this either)
Any recommendations on good ways to display concept art too would be great.
Would I have to buy my own domain from wordpress to do all of this?
I understand that its a lot and would appreciate it so much if anyone took them time to give me a few pointers,
thanks-

Hi all,

I'm working on a project in WordPress that will involve a page have a background with animated text. There will be words that fly in from the sides, possibly from the top and bottom.

I'm just wondering what the best method would be in terms of ease and best practice.

I've considered Flash, but since that has compatibility issues, I know it would be best avoided.

Would coding through CSS or Jquery be a better route? I did find animate.css which has some potential.

And I haven't tried it at all, but would Canvas also be a good possibility?

I've also just considered, as it is only text, just an animated gif for the background. I don't know if that's a good idea or not though.

I'm still an amateur with WordPress, so seeking some advice here. This would be a project for a hosted WordPress site, not a .com site.

Thank you!

Re 1, see the trick I'm explaining here (near the end of the post - "Tabs for pages but no page titles on the actual pages"):

1) change themes. Most themes do not label the home page "Home." Additionally, Some themes allow you to make posts in the Aside format, which does not display a title at all (although this is bad for SEO). You can then link to them using a custom menu if you want them in a tabbed header.

2) You will have to Edit each existing post and disable comments there. To prevent comments on future posts, go to Settings->Discussion and disable them there.

3) Not as far as I am aware. We can't use javascript or iframes here. You could try Slideshare and see if you like that, or the Flickr slideshow http://en.support.wordpress.com/slideshows/slideshare/

3. Slideshow/ animation: I'd like to know if there is a way to create slideshow similar to this site: http://www.jackatley.com. I find WP's default animation (I've created it under my Portfolio menu), very unattractive (most of the space is anyways taken by the grey border surrounding images).
- Is it possible to create a full page self loading slideshow?
-Is it possible to create a slideshow larger in size than the one on my Portfolio page?
-What other slideshow options are available in WP?

First, make sure that your browser is up to date by visiting http://www.whatbrowser.org/

If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.

First, you'll need to add HTML. Add it to a text widget in the sidebar. Here is some example HTML you can use based on the tutorial and using some random images from your header and latest posts:

</div>

To add more images, you would just add more "img" lines with different image links in them.

After that, copy the following CSS (only slightly modified from the tutorial) into your Appearance → Custom Design → CSS editor and click the Preview button:

.photobanner {
	height: 563px;
	margin-bottom: 80px;
	position: absolute;
	top: 0;
	width: 3550px;
}

/*keyframe animations*/
.photobanner .first {
	-webkit-animation: bannermove 30s linear infinite;
	-moz-animation: bannermove 30s linear infinite;
	-ms-animation: bannermove 30s linear infinite;
	-o-animation: bannermove 30s linear infinite;
	animation: bannermove 30s linear infinite;
}

@keyframes bannermove {
	0% {
 margin-left: 0;
	}

	100% {
 margin-left: -2125px;
	}
}

@-moz-keyframes bannermove {
	0% {
 margin-left: 0;
	}

	100% {
 margin-left: -2125px;
	}
}

@-webkit-keyframes bannermove {
	0% {
 margin-left: 0;
	}

	100% {
 margin-left: -2125px;
	}
}

@-ms-keyframes bannermove {
	0% {
 margin-left: 0;
	}

	100% {
 margin-left: -2125px;
	}
}

@-o-keyframes bannermove {
}

100% {
	margin-left: -2125px;
}
}

.photobanner img {
	max-height: 563px;
	-webkit-transition: all .5s ease;
	-moz-transition: all .5s ease;
	-o-transition: all .5s ease;
	-ms-transition: all .5s ease;
	transition: all .5s ease;
}

.photobanner img:hover {
	-webkit-transform: scale(1.1);
	-moz-transform: scale(1.1);
	-o-transform: scale(1.1);
	-ms-transform: scale(1.1);
	transform: scale(1.1);
	cursor: pointer;
	-webkit-box-shadow: 0 3px 5px rgba(0,0,0,0.2);
	-moz-box-shadow: 0 3px 5px rgba(0,0,0,0.2);
	box-shadow: 0 3px 5px rgba(0,0,0,0.2);
}

That's pushing the edges of what CSS can do these days. Pretty neat! Note that these CSS3 rules will only work in the latest browsers, and in the case of Internet Explorer, the animations and transitions won't work in any version so far except IE10. You can refer to these charts for reference:

* http://caniuse.com/#feat=css-animation
* http://caniuse.com/#feat=transforms2d
* http://caniuse.com/#search=transition

Aside: Everyone has access to the stylesheets. CSS is visible by looking at the links in the header code so there's no need to post entire sets of code in the forums and also anyone that knows how to work with CSS can see them. :)

You must presize the gif to the exact size required prior to uploading it. If you crop it after uploading it then it will not display. If that does not resolve your issue then we need a link to the published post or page you have this gif on so we can examine it.

The support files and forum topics I could find all seem to be for an older version. I have tried uploading an animated .gif, and it shows up in my preview, but I can't see the animation unless I click on the picture. I have the basic free version of WordPress. Is there a way that readers can see the animation automatically when they go to my blog?
