Is there a way to automatically limit the number of months shown under the Archives widget, other than manually? I would like to retain some posts for viewing through the Category widget but not hanging around under the Archive widget.

Hello,

Just wondering if someone can tell me how I can add the Archive widget to my Home page ONLY (where my blog posts are). I have a empty text widget on my About page as I didn't want any visible widgets on my 'pages'. However, I would like an Archive widget, just where it's applicable though! (i.e. Home Page with the blog posts!)

They way each theme displays on the Archives and Categories pages either full posts, just titles or thumbnails is coded into the theme in question.

I'm sorry, I read both of those and couldn't find my answer so I must not be asking the question correctly.

When readers follow either my category or my archive, they get a full post of the most recent post for that category or month. I want them to see a list of all posts available in the month or category.

How do I do that?

My posts tend to be longer so a reader following either link will just get the most recent post in that category/month, rather than a list of titles.

Whether or not full posts are displayed on Categories Pages and Archives pages is theme dependent ie. it's coded into the template and we cannot edit templates or themes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

In the majority of themes, posts on category or other archive pages show up just as they do on the main posts page in the blog and the number displayed is also the same. (See this page > Settings > Reading and note how many posts you choose there sets it for all). But in some themes only the beginnings of posts are shown, and in a few themes you only get titles or thumbnails. Can I have my category and archive widgets link to lists of posts under those category/month instead of full posts?

My posts tend to be longer so a reader following either link will just get the most recent post in that category/month, rather than a list of titles.

Now that the whole blog is Private, you need to switch those posts to being published publicly.

Only publicly published posts will appear in the Archives, regardless of overall blog privacy.

I have now changed this blog to private; the older posts still do not appear in the archive.

This is not a major inconvenience for me, but thought someone would want to fix it for others.

Because the blog itself is private. The post status is public, but the entire blog itself is hidden as private.

I have another blog that is private, and all entries still appear in the archive drop down. Why is that different?

Yes, they are showing in 'all posts' and they are readable in their proper time order.

Are the posts that are missing from the Archive widget found in the dashboard > Posts > All Posts?

New to WordPress, and bringing over journals from elsewhere, I have discovered that the Archive Widget does not include all years. Particularly those prior to 2008, while I have entries back to 2006.

It is entirely theme-dependent, so you'll have to find a theme that does it the way you want.

Hi!

Is it possible to have the archive postings appear in an outline format? e.g if someone clicks on the Archive postings from April with 2 postings- April (2), can they then see both post headings as a subset or sub category of the April posting, so that they can have the option of selecting either of the two postings from that April postings?

I would appreciate some help.

Ah yes, timethief. It is a Page I called "Comments" like you said. I use the Twenty Eleven theme though.

I think this is now resolved as the comments will roll over when they reach my preset number. I will be happy with that.

I think tauposeniornet not talking about what you and I would call a comments page at all. I think she's talking about a static page she created (like a feedback page) called "Comments" http://tauposeniornet.wordpress.com/comments/

tauposeniornet is also using Twenty Ten so she can have a sidebar on the static page if she chooses the Sidebar Template, but that means she will get the widget display she has on here front page, which does not include Archives. And from what I can tell she wants to have only an Archives widget on the "Comments" page she created.

You can take it from here please as I have to go. :)

When you reach the number of comments per page you have set, the older comments will be rolled over and onto a second page and then to a third, etc.

Sorry, not quite sure about what to type into my Comments page. I just wanted to be able to put older posts into a drop down menu. (If that makes any sense?)

You cannot place a single widget on that page alone. You cannot have a different widget display than what is on your front page.

Edit that page. On the far right hand side of the page look for Templates in the Page Attributes Module, then use the drop-down menu and select Sidebar Template and click Update, you will get the same widget display you have on your front page.

I suggest that you simply edit that page and type the [archives] shortcode of your choice on it.
