my question: if I start the blog now as a "com," can I later change it to an "org" once that status is complete? or would I have to start a new one all over again?

"Man and his Machine" - very interesting project, and I really like some of your photos, like the vertical framing of Anil at the runway with the airplane caught in frame - you also do some very interesting things with lighting and what I think is time delayed exposure? Anyhow, a website I created is perfect to visually and quickly find a theme that speaks to you.

Go to my website at link removed to wordpress.org site and you will find lots of photography themes, these are premium themes, but they are some of the best available - you might also like the company Photocrati for its "all in one box" approach as well. You can also try this article on link removed to wordpress.org site for other options as well. At a minimum you will at least get some ideas about what you want for your website.

If by "renaming every image" you mean renaming the actual files and re-uploading them, you don't have to do that. If you mean editing the already uploaded files, yes you'll have to do it.
The text that shows up upon hover etc. isn't the filename, it's the image title; WP only inserts the filename as a title when you've failed to provide a title yourself.
So, for the images you have already uploaded and inserted, edit each one of your pages, click the Add Media tool, click the Gallery tab; click Show to open each image popup, enter new titles; click Save All Changes when you're done with all the gallery images, click Update (page).
For the pages that are under construction, you can either enter titles after uploading the images and before inserting the gallery, or of course rename the image files before uploading them.

I learned the hard way that the correct use of this forum is to paste a link to your posts on the same page. Also, they do not like the titles to be in all caps.

For example look at my page on this forum called, "Simple answers to Everyday questions." See how I posted several links on the same page..
