Here’s a list of all the post formats that are available across different themes:

Standard – Your normal, average, everyday blog post. This is the default styling for your theme.
Gallery – Usually will show a thumbnail from the blog post, as well as an excerpt of what the gallery is about.
Aside – These are brief snippets of text that aren’t quite whole blog posts. Useful for quick thoughts and anecdotes
Image — These posts highlight your images
Status — Short updates about what you’re doing right now.
Quote — These posts highlight your blockquoted text in a bolder way than standard posts do
Video — Just like Image posts these posts highlight your videos
Audio — Just like Image and Video these posts highlight your Audio attachments
Chat – These posts highlight snippets of memorable conversations you have with friends, both online and offline.

Note not all themes support all post formats (the list of which ones support what is here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/post-formats/)

Hi, newbie here.

Friendly and to the point:

On the Edit Post page, there are choices for 'Format' which include:

Standard
Aside
Gallery
Image
Video
Quote
Link
Chat
Audio

Most seems self-explanatory. I tested Gallery to see what it looks like with images uploaded.

I entered text and clicked Preview and saw that Quote puts the text in an italic font.

Using the same method, I still don't know what Aside and Chat mean or will do when published.

Besides going through Learn WordPress.com, which I don't feel ready to do, how can I see what Aside and Chat look like and how to use them?

Thank you.

I guess I *am* in the wrong forum! I can't seem to keep track of what is .org and what is .com. Thanks, I'll ask over there.
Hopefully I can convince the tech guy to change us to a different provider soon. We're not really tech savvy here (I'm an intern and the only one here who knows any php) so it's hard to get things updated.

Hello everyone,
I'm working on my company's website and trying to figure out how to get an "aside" type thing to work using an older version of WordPress (our server will not work with the new WordPress)
What I want to do is have a single post titled "PERSON'S NAME" being their profile page, and have a second post titled "PERSON'S NAME 1" or somesuch, which will have resume information and will display on the side of the main post. The whole thing needs to be PHP so that a less experienced user can simply create PERSON'S NAME and PERSON'S NAME 1 and have it lay out correctly.
Logically, I think there should be a way of doing a
get_the_post("post_name"-1)
or something that would do this, but I haven't gotten it to work and haven't seen where I can get help doing this. Can anyone here give me a hint?
Or, if this is impossible, how to fetch a post with the same name but from a different category?
Thank you,
Stephanie
(I know there are plugins that could do this, but since we are running old WordPress, most plugins don't work and we are trying to avoid them)

Hi again,

Look I don
t want to be contradicting a member of staff but it doesn
t even appear in mine. I copied my quick edit section (it doesn`t look very good I know) below and as you can see there is nothing below the Status option which is where the list of formats should be (according to the support page on same).

I was looking around in my dashboard for ages yesterday after Time Thief responded and could not see any option for selecting formats. That
s why I got back to her. Believe me, I
m not interested in wasting anyone
s time. There really is no sign of this standard format option on my dashboard. Also, there is a list of themes which accept the list of formats in your support section that does not include flower power (it
s in the post format page as you probably know).

Hi Timethief,

About the
Aside appearing beside title of post

Thanks for your help but your suggestions don`t work given the flower power theme I use.

Your advice:
If you are creating all your posts on the front page of WordPress.com at this link http://wordpress.com/#!/post/ then you are creating asides - not standard posts.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/new-post-screen/
If you create your posts here on your own blog's Dashboard > Posts > Add New then you can select the "standard" post format in the far right hand column and this will not be an issue.

Reply:
I have posted new posts from the front page of wordpress before and have never had a problem. Generally though, I use the one you suggest - Posts, Add New (without the standard format option, which I do not have).

Your advice:
You can Bulk Edit your posts from the Edit Posts Screen and select the "standard" post format and then click "update"
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/#bulk-ed

My reply:
The solution you suggest - to edit the post to standard does not work as I use the flower power theme. I have the option to update to bouquet but I haven
t yet and did not intend to because I like the flower power theme. However now it looks like I
ll have to. This theme, flower power, does not support the new selection of formats. It does not appear in the edit screen.
