How can I have the attachments use the .net address? (This is the whole point of getting a custom url, right?)

Yes. Note, however, the more links you use, the more likely you are to be thrown into the Spam filter.

2. Can it include a JPG image?
No, but it can contain a link to it. Only the blog admin can post using images in comments.

3. Can it include a link to a PDF that I've put on my blog's media library?
Yes, see my answer to 1.

4. Is there a maximum number of words for the text of a comment?
None that I have seen, and I've seen comments with hundreds of words.

4. Would the above answers be different for different themes?
Nope.

Hi, Timethief. Thank you for your reply.

With regards to (1) I did discover that since my last post and tested it. It "works" but unlike Posterous it doesn't have a feature to post an image directly to a FaceBook gallery. So people must click to go to the WordPress post itself.

It also leaves some undesirable text trails, such as this ill-formatted: "Like this:LikeBe the first to like this post."

With regards to (5), thanks. I will look all that over. I did glance at it earlier. I am already paying for the other hosting, so that part is not an issue. But I am concerned about backups.

About the import attachment question, I posted a followup to the thread you referred me to. To me it looks like the attachments are actually imported. But maybe I'm misinterpreting the image URL in the post.

Thanks,

The import finished successfully. Interestingly enough, it appears that even pictures which Posterous didn't import (instead they referred to the previous location) actually seem to be imported and stored now at WordPress.com. If I am interpreting the URLs correctly.

For example, this old post from 2007:

http://douglerner.wordpress.com/2007/07/26/edo-no-koku-edo-era-time-keeping/

has a picture of a timepiece. The image URL seems to be here at wordpress.com. Over at posterous it was actually a link back to my old self-hosted blog at hostgator.

Am I correct in assuming that WordPress actually got the original media and is now storing it?

Thanks,

With the Twitter buyout of Posterous I'm concerned about the couple of years I've invested in building up my Posterous blog. Right now I'm importing it to my wordpress blog just in case.

There are so many unknowns though. I tried searching for answers to these questions, but couldn't really find anything:

1. Does WordPress also have the ability to auto-post to FaceBook and Twitter? One thing I really like(d) about Posterous is the ability to send email to my blog (with tags) and have the post auto-posted to FaceBook, Twitter and Tumblr. So it was a one-stop, easy way to publish everywhere. I know it is possible to set an email address to post to WordPress, but is there a way of then having my entries auto-posted elsewhere?

2. Can subscribers to my WordPress blog reply with comments by email?

3. WordPress is currently importing my Posterous post. It says it is also bringing in attachments. So far the status is:

Attachments: 387

Will the attachments actually be stored at WordPress?

4. This one is a little woolly. I actually started my blog with a self-hosted WordPress blog in my Hostgator account. When I imported that blog to Posterous I believe it just imported references to the attachments instead of the attachments themselves. So I've kept that old self-hosted WordPress blog running so make sure there aren't old broken attachments. I wonder how the WordPress.com import will deal with this.

5. In fact, I wonder if it is best to just return to my own self-hosted WordPress.com blog at Hostgator. Anybody have any thoughts about that (features only here at WordPress.com, etc.?)

Thanks!

I am currently unable to export this blog (for use on a self hosted wp blog) as a whole which would include image/file attachments. exporting only posts gives me the posts but no image attachments. Side caching images gives me nada..I need help with this as this site is to be live in a few days.. I'd prefer the images be hosted locally and not link back to wp.com. Please help. I've emailed support and gotten nothing.

Did you bother to read the Scribd link above? http://en.support.wordpress.com/scribd/

Tabloid is the paper size (11x17) Open Office Draw is an open source drawing program - but you say you can generate the PDF file with the program you are using - so just follow the Scribd instructions for PDF documents.

No, WP doesn't let you post it as an image on the blog; you can post it as a file, so you could highlight text and people could click to download the PDF.

But if you simply upload the PDF to Scribd, then it displays. You can see it on my blog here: http://raincoastermedia.com/2010/01/26/revitalizing-a-media-reform-movement-in-canada-by-openmedia/

Raincoaster... Thank you. I am sounding incredibly stupid I know but I have never heard of Scribd before and so don't appreciate it's probable value. I can easily generate a PDF of a family tree chart but didn't know if my blog would allow me to put it on a static page, as I have done with .jpgs. I don't know what part Scribd would play in this exercise, although I'm not backwards when it comes to being forward with new software :-) Thank you for your patience - I'll give it a try and figure it out... K

You'll find Scribd quite easy to use, actually, and now that I think of it of course PDFs can have links, so if each family member has a post or page about him/her you can embed it right into the document.
