When you do the next import the software will recognize which posts are new and add them.

An export file is a copy of content only.

if i export content from the main blog, it's not that the content will disappear from my blog right?

Register a blog and set it to private.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

Then create XML export files periodically and import them into it.

Log into the Main blog, go to Tools → Export, and download the XML (WXR) file to your computer.
In the Backup blog, go to Tools → Import → WordPress, and upload the file you downloaded in step 1. After you upload the file, you can choose the option to Download & import file attachments if you want to move your media files.

i want to have a back up of my content on a different private blog but still have the current blog running. what do i do?

Is there a way to backup my wordpress file automatically? The way I have done it thus far is simply copying and pasting into Microsoft Word. Is there another way to do this? Thank you for any help.

We can have as many free blogs as we wish. I suggest you create another one, set the visibility to "private", import the content from your main blog into it, and create a mirror blog to test in and use as a back-up blog. Please see this post as it sets out how to do this is an step by step fashion. For other blog backup methods see this post.

Yes. Copies of everything you have written and uploaded are stored in more than one location.

They say so, but I've seen one case where things went POOF. You're responsible for your own backups, and they're easily done via the Export feature on the dashboard.

The export feature will not back-up images. When you do an import it uses the references to the images to load them from the original server.
@ahipshooter
Since the images are your main concern I would use something like httrack to download your site, as well as doing an export. It would then be possible if you had to restore it to put your downloaded site on the web, edit the references in the import, then import the blog. The restore would involve a lot of messing around or a day's work for a WordPress contractor though!

I have over 300 images in galleries and slideshows on my blog. But if WP servers were to go down is there any other way that those who have photo-related blogs can salvage all of their work via WP. At least it will spare many us days of rebuilding/recreating one's own blog.

I think that we all should "export" our blog monthly. Save it somewhere. That way if something goes wrong you always have a backup. I wish I would have known about this with my 1st blog.

You can get the XML file from the dashboard area Tools->Export and use that file for all the text and code. But it won't give any photos. I use a Mirroring software called HTTrack Website Copier available at http://www.httrack.com It just grabs the whole site down to whatever level you specify. It is kind of technical though. There are several other mirroring softwares that are easier to use if you do a web search.

is it possible to backup all posts by creating a database dump or a similiar action?

i want to backup my blog in an easy way. copying each post would take days or even weeks.
