There are many ways to create a bilingual site.

What you did was to create Pages titled by each language. You cannot put posts on Pages the way you wish it to work.

Here are other options.

If you are translating the same post, put one language at the top and the translation at the bottom of the same post. Many people learning languages love this as they can read in the language they are learning and glance at the other language to make sure they have it right.

If you are producing separate content in the two languages, create a category for English and another for French and other categories reflective of the topics you are talking about along with tags in both languages to increase navigation opportunities. Use the Custom Menu feature to place the English and French categories where you wish them (I would not use a submenu as these are key navigation points right? Just add them directly to the menu), and users can click which category of posts to read. That is probably the best method.

Thanks and good luck with your travels.

I've looked up other threads on this and figured out how to make a submenu. Now under blog it says both English and French but my question is how to get the posts to go under each submenu instead of just under blog. Is there a way?

Hi all,
I'm developing an ecommerce site with wordpress.
The plugins I am using are:
- WooCommerce
- WPML (wordpress multilingual plugin)
- WooCommerce Multilingual

The site is in english (set as original language) and italian. My aim is to get an index splash page with two buttons, "english" and "italian", by clicking on which the user can choose the required language, and then navigate the whole site with the language set.

How can I achieve this?

thanks in advance

One way to experiment with new techniques is to set up a test blog which you keep private so only you will see it while you learn-by-doing. Then when you understand something, for example how to make a custom menu, you can apply it to your "live" blogs.

Hi dboiv,

Not sure if this will help but personally I have somewhat started a bilingual blog for both English and Chinese, even when I selected English as my primary language setting. I am able to translate and type most things into Chinese yet things like "search" or the months under the calendar will be English. Though I just presume that most people would understand them as they are really basic English vocabs ;)

Here's what my blog looks like if you are curious:

Hi

It is currently possible to set the main language of the blog in the page "Settings" -> "General". If I choose "Français", I obtain the following HTML code:

<html lang="fr">

Actually, I would like to set a secondary language so that the search engines "know" that most of my articles (currently more than 82%) have been translated in English, I would like to obtain the following HTML code:

<html lang="fr,en">

Creating 2 separate blogs would be a huge waste of time and several other users attempt to do something similar. It is already possible to use the markup "span" to indicate that a part of an article is in English but my whole blog is seen by search engines and Technorati as a non English blog containing some English words.

I have to point out that automatic translation may give approximative results. For example, Google Translate sometimes removes negations, it completely changes the meaning of the sentence, there are the same problems with hidden meaning and some idiomatic expressions. That's why I prefer translating my articles (even though English is not my mother tongue).

The addition of a secondary language as a new feature would not be that difficult to implement. It would have a very low impact on the source code of this content management system.

I don't ask the staff to allow bilingual blogs to appear in several sections in which blogs are sorted by languages in the main website WordPress.com because it would be confusing, English readers would see keywords in other languages, etc... I only suggest that such a secondary language would be mainly useful for search engines.
