The RSS feed was no longer valid. I tested the feed and got this comment from feedvalidator.org:

line 127, column 190: XML parsing error: <unknown>:127:190: not well-formed (invalid token)

On closer inspection, I found a non-ASCII character had snuck in (it was text I'd copied from an email and the original was badly formatted). Removing the character cleared the problem up.
