It looks to me like a thumbnail of you 1280x960 image was used somewhere in the process. It's displayed as 960x260, but has 4x4 pixelation. That suggests something squeezed it to 240x65 then re-expanded it.

So do as thesacredpath suggests. Make a crop of your 1280x960 to a size of 960x260 directly. If that crop sizing isn't the view you want, make a resized copy of the original 1280x960 and try to crop that to 960x260.

Thank you, all. I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I think the problem was that I clicked on something and it made everything smaller (like when you hit control+minus). I hit control plus and now the image is like it used to be.
Put this problem down to pilot error!

@prometheuscomic: Images resized by WP loose some color and sharpness. Unfortunately, after some changes made last August, that also includes images inserted in real size (such as the example you link to) as long as their code includes the dimensions declarations. So the solution is to switch your post to html and remove the width and height commands from the image code.

I post comics on my blog. Yesterday I noticed a slight blur to my images. When I click on the image it comes up by itself and it looks sharper. Is there some sort of problem? Compare my post for Jan 11 here: http://prometheuscomic.wordpress.com/ with the comic as it appears by itself here: http://prometheuscomic.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/prometheus-not-big-enough.jpg The tiny bird is definitely sharper in the stand-alone image. Can this be fixed? Thanks for your help.

due to the nature of the stuff in the image, do NOT save it as a jpg. JPG compression uses anti-aliasing on text which makes it look fuzzy. Save either as gif or png - png would be preferred.

Yikes, I've been uploading headers with jpg. Thanks for that notice!

is there a way to not let wordpress compress the
picture

Instead of cropping, I often start with a panoramic image that is close, then just adjust the dimensions of the photo prior to uploading it to the theme. It's amazing how the photos still look great with this adjustment. Unfortunately, the header size for each theme is different; it is best to have a semipermanent theme before uploading a header.

And as a note, if you upload an image that is the correct size for the header space, wordpress does absolutely nothing with it. It is used just as you uploaded it. If you look at the same image in various browsers, you will find that some are more sharp than others, and that is because of the differences in how browsers render.

hello,

maybe this was asked before but i couldn't find a corresponding topic ...

however, i recognized that wordpress brutally compresses the headerpicture
when uploaded. the text and the pictures become very blurry nearly unreadable.
(see: http://damennamen.wordpress.com/)

my question is now: is there a way to not let wordpress compress the
picture or to get the headerpicture linked from my server (where i
have all other blog pictures as well)?

thank you and kind regards,
