When I copied a photo to my blog today, it did not appear on the final screen, except as a tiny square which takes you to another window when you doubler-click on it. The picture was originally bmp, but I reneamed it jpg and it seemed to work on the workng screen but not on the final post.

Bitmaps ( .bmp) are not supported. You'll need to convert to one of the accepted file types.

You can upload the following image types to a post or page on your WordPress.com blog:

.jpg/.jpeg
.gif
.png

How can I inset a .bmp file into a post? This doesn't seem to be a supported format. I've pasted a screen print into Picture Manager and cropped it ready to be inserted into a new post, but i haven't been able to find a way to do it.

.bmp files used to have security holes which is why we disallow their upload. Security comes first, everything else second.

Internet Explorer always saves my graphic files in bmp... and quite frankly my patience is wearing thin as I have to go on to Paint or Photoshop etc. to convert files to jpeg or jpg.

Typing '.jpg' or '.jpeg' on my saved files didn't work.... so BRING ON the bmps!!

It looks like I figured it out. I save the updated header as a JPG and it accepted it. It's odd because the original header was a BMP and it accepted that.

I'll leave this here in case someone else has the same problem.

Another problem.

I had a custom header with the default theme. I made a small edit to the BMP file in Paint Shop Pro 9 and saved it under another name. When I tried to upload it as the new custom header, I got this cryptic message:

File type does not meet security guidelines. Try another.

What's this all about and how do I fix it?

Funky pictures! Only problem is, I see them as jpgs, not bmps. Somebody a couple of weeks ago reported that Cheezburger was displaying bmps too, and I was unable to find any. I wonder if this is a quirk of your browser? Can you download one of hte images to your desktop and see what your graphics program says about it once it's there?

I only upload jpg pictures to my WordPress media library, but they always appears as bmp files in the blog, what makes the page too heavy. How can I solve this? If I upload a jpg file, I want it to appear as a jpg file in the blog...
