They are being placed there by software on your own computer, unfortunately. Notice the text below that says "Ads not by this site"? These ads are sometimes caused by malware or a virus, but more often it is due to a browser extension or toolbar that you may have installed in your browser.

They are the result of a browser add-on "text enhance". It's not easy to disable. You can try to delete the program as they do offer a way to stop the Ads by using a check box, but the next time you clear your cookies, they send a new cookie and the text-enhance is back on your computer. Please try logging out, clearing your browser cache and cookies, disabling all browser add-ons and extensions, and then do a computer malware and virus scan. Lastly, reboot your computer and try logging in again. View your blog and if the ads you see are being caused by browser adware then you will not still see the advertising you saw before.

Many bloggers do not know this because despite the fact they ticked the box required to get a free blog, they did not read the ToS. Many also do not read features page, or advertising entry in the support documents after registering their username and blog(s). Also note that as the ads do not display to us when we are logged in, and as many use browsers with ad blockers when logged out, they may not realize they are there at all.

If you feel an ad is inappropriate please take a screenshot upload it into your Media Library and post the file name here so Staff know it's there for them to view.

The word "Well" appears to be a hyperlink but a mouseover pops up a gambling site advert. do not want to promote online gambling.

Why is this happening? How can I prevent it? Why is it only firefox?

You can't. That's not an advertisement, it's a site/theme credit and it's required.

May I remove credit links such as ‘Blog at WordPress.com’, theme, font, or toolbar links?

There is a large red x at the right, but when I click it to close this ad, nothing happens and it prevents me from accessing the admin bar at the top.

Is this from you guys or something else with my firefox browser? It is becoming rather annoying and I haven't clicked the link for fear of some virus.

A couple of people had listed the malware-safemode system that I tried. It apparently worked for them but not for me. There was another set of instructions there, but I could not figure them out, and besides, I already uninstalled Firefox, and hopefully the problem went away. . . watch out, though! At the end of that link you sent? Someone sent a URL that takes you to Babylon, another fake search site!

Oh, and the people at WordPress might want to know that this all started when I tried to download their ebook software called Anthologize. Don't touch it unless you want the Claro virus!!!!

MacManx--did you check my private blog? Is all the advertising stuff gone?

When I downloaded Google Chrome, the Claro virus got in there, but I was able to delete it from the extensions.

Plus in addition to running all that anti-spy software, I changed all my passwords.

Is there anything else I should do? Thanks to all the smart people here! Wish I knew what I was doing. . .

Typically, users have attributed this to a corrupt or infected browser extension or add-on.

If deactivating all of your browser's extensions or add-ons resolves the issue, please try reactivating each one individually until you find the cause.
