You cannot build or use your own custom theme built from scratch at WordPress.com.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/

http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/adding-new-themes/

The only themes we can use are those found here > Appearance > Themes
This is a multiuser blogging platform. All blogs wearing the same theme are using the same underlying template and we cannot access the underlying files and edit templates or themes. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

There are two free themes, Sandbox and Toolbox designed to allow maximum flexibility for CSS editing and creating new “skins”. Toolbox is more modern and includes a lot of support for CSS3 and HTML5, so it is really only limited by your skills and knowledge.

If you have CSS editing experience the upgrade will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but will not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. It does not allow you to remove footer links to the theme designer or to WordPress.com. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes at WordPress.COM. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/custom-css/

I understand how to use WordPress well but I would like to step into making some themes. My a little lost on the process. I understand that a theme installed does not completely modify the core files and helps with updates but I am lost in the proper steps to make my own. Ive been reading a lot but Ive seen many frameworks and I was wondering do you build onto to the framework as if the framework is its own theme extended from the original site?? Any better documentation would be great or understanding.

I have a wordpress blog, dangordonreporting.wordpress.com. I just registered a domain name, dangordonreporting.com, but not through wordpress. I also bought web hosting from a different company. I'd like to still use wordpress to work on my new site, but not use wordpress hosting. How do I keep the same wordpress blog I have and begin building it with wordpress.org?

@raincoaster. Of course there are are already some possibilities to integrate with facebook: the like my page text widget, pulling the rss-feed to publish it a page's timeline via RSS, networked blogs, addthis or similar things.

But if you take a look at non WP.com hosted wordpress blogs, it is quite common that you see an "I like" button below each post and a java scripted like box.

It really should not be too hard for wordpress.com to create and integrate some widgets which provide the functionality of facebook's social plugins and to provide the option to add sharethis/addtoany functionality in the postings' footer as they did with the poll daddy's rating.

I think we're all aware that traffic is generated by links and word of mouth and an easier way to allow your readers to post your blog on facebook or share it with one click will really help to promote the blog.

Lots of people (hundreds) have requested the Follow thing. Lots more have requested greater integration with FB, but that one's hard because FB itself keeps moving the goal posts; they don't really want people on other sites to integrate with FB, they want them to leave all other sites and stay on FB only.

That said, depending on what exactly you have in mind, you can make your own "Like My Page" widget in a text widget, complete with image and link. You just have to code it by hand.

And you can use GetSocial, as I do on every post, to make it easy for readers to post your stuff to FB etc. http://Getsociallive.com has even got the code for a FB Like button.

At first I wasn't going to post, but then I said what the heck.... All you can say is one thing I don't like, huh?

I love wordpress.com and I love my facebook. I would love to be able to get more people to come to my blog off of facebook and generate more from my site to go to facebook.

In order to do that, I need a little bit of help.

so with that, if someone could possible generate something that works with your fb pages or a like widget on your site, that would be super duper awesome!

Hey guys, I've just started out on the long process of building myself a new portfolio site and want to create a blog that'll run along side. This is mainly for my own use as a live referencing page.
I've designed a very simple layout i want to build but just wondered how easy it will be to do? I've installed WordPress on my site so everything's in place to start just my css skills are very basic. Is there any good places to find guides on easy build? I'm quite willing to get my hands dirty and learn as i go.....

Many thanks!
