nickdimmock on "Canvas causing slowdown in Chrome 23"

Hi. I'm getting bad slowdown in the Dashboard when using Chrome. Specifically moving over a link causes the browser to lag when a statistics canvas is on the screen. I suspect this is down to Chrome, but I mention it in case there's a workaround for WordPress.

Here's all I have:

The problem is that when I move the mouse over a link, the mouse pauses by a fraction of a second. So running the cursor over the links in the main left-hand dashboard menu makes it look like I'm watching a low-framerate webcast - slow and jerky.

The problem only occurs when a stats graph is on the screen (e.g. the visitor stats on the dashboard home, or the main site stats graph).

It only occurs with links - when the mouse is over text areas (or the bars of the graphs themselves) it behaves fine. The links under the main stats graph ('views today' and 'busiest day') do trigger the slowdown.

The problem goes away if I reduce the size of the browser window and scroll the page so the charts are not visible.

It also goes away if I use the inspector in Chrome to delete the canvas nodes that contain the graphs.

Turning off all Chrome extensions has no effect on the problem.

If I enable the Web Developer Toolbar extension and disable CSS, the problem remains - I think the canvas is still being rendered but isn't visible, because shrinking the view area makes the problem go away, as abobe).

If I disable Javascript, the problem goes away (the graphs don't get rendered).

Firefox on the same machine doesn't have the problem.

My version of Chrome is 23.0.1271.64 (Official Build 165188) m.

Here are the reports from chrome://gpu - I'm unable to do anything about the drivers myself, as it's a work machine. But as I say, Firefox (16.0.2) is fine:

Graphics Feature Status
Problems Detected
Intel drivers older than 14.42.7.5294 on Windows XP are possibly unreliable.: 74212
Disable 3D (but not Stage3D) in Flash on XP: 134885
Accelerated 2D canvas is unavailable: either disabled at the command line or not supported by the current system.

If there's anything I can try (as a non-administrator) to fix this, I'll have a go and report back. I haven't noticed any similar lag on other sites while using Chrome - for example sites listed on http://www.canvasdemos.com seem to behave fine.

Hope that's enough info - if there's anything else I can supply, let me know.

Thanks.

CANVAS (http://www.freshpursuits.com/canvas/preview) is a layout manager that will allow people to have a layout like flickr. It has a WYSIWYG editor so you don't have to look at code. A bit like the Sidebar Widget thing in WordPress.

It would be cool if (and I don't know about technical security hazards) CANVAS was used for WYSIWYG editing.

Sorry Podz, the post was stuck while being sent.

Well, I just had a feeling that it wasn't allowed because otherwise one'd be able to see a plug-ins section.... Don't have to explain the rest because I seem to be one of the many naive ones who are too used to template editing in other blogging services. (Nuisance!)
Anyway, CANVAS (http://www.freshpursuits.com/canvas/preview) seems cool - and I just sent feedback suggesting a CANVAS partnership. This might resolve the needs of template-modifiers without having to look at Code.

Thanks!

I have a blog hosted on wordpress.com (nextbyramla.wordpress.com). I wanted to install a plug-in from a third party (Canvas; http://support.freshpursuits.com/documentation/show/installation).

The instruction says:
**********
Step 3: Upload the Canvas folder

To install Canvas, simply drop the entire Canvas folder into your WordPress plugins directory (wp-content/plugins/) and activate the plugin from your Plugins page within the WordPress administration panel.
**********
I am not self-hosting wordpress (which I started using just yesterday)... so plz tell me:

1. Is it allowed to install third-party plug-in?
2. How do I access the plug-in directory, where is it?
3. If my blog is hosted on wordpress.com, how can I get an external theme if I dont have servers of my own?

I am very new to wordpress - please help!
