You can't 'categorise' your blog, instead, you use tags and categories to 'categorise' each of your posts, so that they will then pop up in the reader to possibly interested readers.

So when you make some posts, you just add tags to it, and categories for the 'featured tags' (make sure you don't use more than a total of 15 categories and tags).

Ha! Danielsreading, you are one step ahead of me.

I just backtracked on the links followed and came to the same page.

Learn WordPress.com
Get Connected
Don’t fear the Reader
Recommended Blogs - What do you want to read?
http://en.wordpress.com/#!/read/recommendations/

I now see the recommendations page is to find blogs of interest and suppose my association was that the Emanate Presence blog would not fit in any of the categories shown.

But I understand now that the Tags are an important way for blogs to be found. Here are some tags that came up, which seem to fit the EP blog:

Daily Living
Enlightenment
Life
Love
Philosophy
Religion
Spiritual Path
Spirituality

in addition:

Inspiration
Personal development
Personal growth
Poetry
Reflection
Self-awareness

I brought the Tag Cloud Widget onto my Dashboard. How do I make it show on the blog?

Any suggestions for tags for this blog, if anyone is inspired to answer? The posts will be on a similar theme so the main tags can be duplicated for most. Thanks.

I actually do remember being asked to do this when I first signed up. But I really don't think it has any impact on the blog's categorisation. I think it may actually be more related to your reader, because, from memory, it looked like this: https://wordpress.com/#!/read/recommendations/ which is the one for the reader anyway. Is this what came up?

" a WordPress.com page that encouraged me to select categories of my interest in other blogs." I do not know what that could be. We had an off-topic section for self-promotion, but it was deleted about a year ago. Technorati asks you to choose tags for your blog, but clearly you're not talking about Technorati. If you find the site again, please put a link to it here.

I am referring to a WordPress.com page that encouraged me to select categories of my interest in other blogs.

It came from my following a link which had to do with 'how to make one's own blog more visible.'

What I read said, if I remember rightly, 'categorize your blog so others can find it.'

At WordPress.com you don't categorize the blog itself; you categorize each post, and you create your own categories, so if you don't fit into what you think is a pre-existing category, just don't use it. Use something else. Every post must have at least one category attached to it, even if only Uncategorized. But I have, for instance, the category "Operation Global Media Domination." I doubt anyone else is using that.

If you know what your post is about, distill it to one or two words and use that as the category. If you don't know what your post is about, leave it unplublished until you do.

As I explored WP more, found a place for connecting with the community.

The page asked me to select categories of interest.

Well, I am 60 this year and have had experiences enough for many lifetimes.

I am well satisfied with business, technology, in fact all the categories offered.

The only one that is attractive is Nature. No further interest in the others.

I am interested in people, and will visit their blogs individually as I feel drawn.

Just not interested in the WP categories.

The blog I am writing, however, does not fit even into the Nature category, when it comes to categorizing it.

'Nature' brings up mental images of wildlife calendars, National Geographic, PBS, maybe articles on sustainability or environmental issues. Those may be nice, but they are not what I write.

I could see the blog in Personal/Spiritual Development. No WP category comes close.

Okay, justpi, here's a shoot (from your response on another thread.)

Any suggestions on how to categorize the Emanate Presence blog?

Pages are static. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog. There is only one main page for posts in a blog and all posts will show on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page.

What’s critical is:
(1) a clear comprehension of the differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
(2) a clear comprehension of the fact that there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. But we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page. We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can either put the categories widget into the sidebar, or you can create a custom menu and add the categories into the custom menu.
http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2011/12/19/custom-menus/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/categories-widget/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-category-pages-to-your-menu
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-tag-pages-and-posts-to-your-menu

If you do not want all the posts to show on the main page, then you can create a static front page for your site. If you wish, you can also create a “blog” page, but you do not have to if you do not want to.

Choice 1 static front page.
Choice 2 running page for all posts on front page.

Which do you choose? It’s one or the other. If you choose Choice 1 static front page then you have to create two pages. One for the static front page which you can call anything you choose example “Welcome”, and one for the blog posts to appear on which you can call anything you choose example “Blog”. After your do that you go here > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”. http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/front-page/

A WordPress blog can either be structured as a page based website or its conventional post based structure can be retained and to have a clear appreciation of the effects on SEO you may wish to read this Better Blogging at WordPress.com: Pages and Posts

I prefer a page above a blogroll widget too. With the widget, the sidebar will become cluttered fast.
Also, it's not as pleasent to read & adding more info to the link (about why you should check that blog out for instance) isn't easy to add. (I hate having to search the sidebar for the thing I'm looking for, I prefer using sitemaps.)

That's why I asked here, hoping that it might has come up before and I just hadn't found it on the forum. (As I didn't think I'd be the first to ask, but it seems I was!)

I know the "read blog" tab is quite new, so it might still be in development. I'll ask staff in a few days (busy days ahead) and if allowed, will post he answer here so others with the same question can see the answer. :)

Hi all,

New blogger here.
As I've been wandering around blogland I got a bit over enthousiastic and started following loads of blogs.
I love the tab "read blogs". But, with my blogging-following spree the result is that My "read blogs" is very slow to load.
(might also be due to plugins like ghostery and https everywhere?)

1.) I wonder if there is a way or possible development to be able to categorize the blogs I follow and read them per category? That would make loading them faster and makes it more managable for me.

2.) Also, can people see a list of blogs I follow somewhere?

3.) Can I make some kind of export of the list of blogs I follow? As sometimes the names and URL are different and I can't see from the "read blogs" tab which url belongs to the blog. Also, I might want to post this list somewhere if the answer to Question2 is no. And, if it keeps getting slow, I have a backup of my followed blogs and I could make notes on it. (In case the answer to Question 1 is No as well.)

Thanks in advance!

We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages. Note: There must be one published post in each Category in order for there to be anything to display.

A custom menu allows you to display Categories with drop-downs to sub-categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages with drop-downs to sub-pages and custom links in your custom menu as well. You choose the order in which to display the foregoing in your custom menu. You choose which to display and which to hide. How to create a custom menu. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus

WordPress doesn't have "sections." You can use categories and sub categories for organizing posts, and then you can even put those categories and subcategories into a custom menu.

For pages you cannot use categories, but what you can do is create a organizational hierarchy of pages using the custom menu feature.

What do you want to happen when someone clicks on one of the images?

The photos will have to be placed in posts. Images by themselves cannot be categorized. You could use the gallery function to show a group of paintings in a post or you can insert them one-by-one and then include text with each image if you wish.

Drop the idea of folders entirely, and then it becomes EASY to categorize your videos.

Just use the regular Post Categories. Then your Video page will always bring up all the videos, but your Black and White Videos for instance, will only show the black and white ones.

I just found out about shortcode for WordPress.com blogs. I love how anyone can hack up some code on a page to display different things.

What I want to do is Categorize each post per month, and I would like to have each post sub-categorized under each month sub-categorized by date. So instead of archiving by month having the number of posts beside each month, I want to show the month(possibly with a link to the month showing the posts) and posts with the title of each post per month under the month posted.

It would essentially look a lot nicer and fill up the page and look more spaced out.

If anyone knows how to do so, or if it's possible, please respond.

Thanks a lot.
