Hi, I've been using the Twenty Eleven theme for over a year and love the simplicity and look of it. The only downside is that when you click on one of the categories, archives, etc it doesn't show a neat list (either headings or summaries) but the whole lengthy post which means that the older posts are never seen as you have to scroll forever.

I'm having a real problem with this as my older posts are practically lost to viewers now. For example, I'd like this to happen: When you click on Restaurant in the menu bar, I want it to go to a page that shows a list or summaries of all the restaurants. Can I do this with a showcase page? I've tried my best but no success! I like the front page to show my latest posts as it does now:

http://crushland.wordpress.com to see what I mean

Thanks for reading, I'd love some help please.

Do not create Categories and Tags with the same keywords. This will make you appear to search engines as if you are tag spamming because they treat both categories and tags in exactly the same way. Also note that if you do not edit and remove the duplication now you will be facing an editing mess in the future.

I hope someone can help me!
I'm not sure which version of WordPress I'm currently running but I've recently changed my theme to Twenty Ten. However, on both blogs I run, I'm getting the following message on my home page:

"Not found. Apologies but the page you requested could not be found. Perhaps searching will help."

Also, I've created categories in my widgets and added a post to a couple of them and the categories are not appearing on the right side of my blog. What am I doing wrong?!

For those who want to visit my sites, they are:
http://abalcomb510035musiccomposition2.wordpress.com/
and
http://creativewritingforchildren2.wordpress.com/

I need to get these blogs up and running because they are being used for my undergraduate studies and this setup issue is delaying things!

Many thanks.

WordPress.com has traditionally not allowed adding custom form code, and "input" is one of those. It's also mentioned on this related help page if you'd like to read more:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

Would it work for you to use an image instead? You can use the :before pseudo element to add a small image to the left of list elements, and that might work out well for what you're trying to do.

Hello, I tried to find out by myself the answer to this but i found no post about it... or entry in the forum.

I have to retrieve a list of posts which must belog to a certain category OR to a certain custom post type.

For example, i have a normal post categorized as NEWS (cat_ID = 3) (N1) and i have a custom post type called "interviews", with for example 3 posts (I1, I2, I3) and lets say other custom post type called "OTHER" with 2 posts, O1, O2

When i query for the posts, i want to get in the lists /array returned: N1, I1, I2, I3, O1, O2 (irrelevant order...)

I am trying it through WP_Query but i have no luck... My code snippet is:

<br />
$args = array(<br />
 'post_type' => array('interviews', 'other')<br />
 ,'cat' => 3<br />
 ,'posts_per_page' => self::limit_posts<br />
 ,'orderby'=>'date'<br />
 ,'order'=>'DESC'<br />
 // ,'meta_key'=>'_thumbnail_id'<br />
 // ,'meta_compare'=>'>='<br />
 // ,'meta_value'=>'1'<br />
 );</p>
<p> $posts_custom = new WP_Query($args);<br />
 var_dump( $posts_custom );die;<br />

And i get nothing... if i query only by post_type or only by category, i do get results...

how can i make that "OR" query?

I hope i made myself understood ^_^and thank you in advance

You can't 'categorise' your blog, instead, you use tags and categories to 'categorise' each of your posts, so that they will then pop up in the reader to possibly interested readers.

So when you make some posts, you just add tags to it, and categories for the 'featured tags' (make sure you don't use more than a total of 15 categories and tags).

Ha! Danielsreading, you are one step ahead of me.

I just backtracked on the links followed and came to the same page.

Don’t fear the Reader
Recommended Blogs - What do you want to read?
http://en.wordpress.com/#!/read/recommendations/

I now see the recommendations page is to find blogs of interest and suppose my association was that the Emanate Presence blog would not fit in any of the categories shown.

But I understand now that the Tags are an important way for blogs to be found. Here are some tags that came up, which seem to fit the EP blog:

Daily Living
Enlightenment
Life
Love
Philosophy
Religion
Spiritual Path
Spirituality

in addition:

Inspiration
Personal development
Personal growth
Poetry
Reflection
Self-awareness

I brought the Tag Cloud Widget onto my Dashboard. How do I make it show on the blog?

Any suggestions for tags for this blog, if anyone is inspired to answer? The posts will be on a similar theme so the main tags can be duplicated for most. Thanks.

At WordPress.com you don't categorize the blog itself; you categorize each post, and you create your own categories, so if you don't fit into what you think is a pre-existing category, just don't use it. Use something else. Every post must have at least one category attached to it, even if only Uncategorized. But I have, for instance, the category "Operation Global Media Domination." I doubt anyone else is using that.

If you know what your post is about, distill it to one or two words and use that as the category. If you don't know what your post is about, leave it unplublished until you do.

As I explored WP more, found a place for connecting with the community.

The page asked me to select categories of interest.

Well, I am 60 this year and have had experiences enough for many lifetimes.

I am well satisfied with business, technology, in fact all the categories offered.

The only one that is attractive is Nature. No further interest in the others.

I am interested in people, and will visit their blogs individually as I feel drawn.

Just not interested in the WP categories.

The blog I am writing, however, does not fit even into the Nature category, when it comes to categorizing it.

'Nature' brings up mental images of wildlife calendars, National Geographic, PBS, maybe articles on sustainability or environmental issues. Those may be nice, but they are not what I write.

I could see the blog in Personal/Spiritual Development. No WP category comes close.

Okay, justpi, here's a shoot (from your response on another thread.)

Any suggestions on how to categorize the Emanate Presence blog?

That's a function of how the underlying HTML is setup for "Read more" links in general on WordPress. You cannot change functionality like that using the Custom Design upgrade which is for appearance-related changes. WordPress.com doesn't offer a way for you to change that particular behavior through a setting, it's just how "read more" links are setup to work. Sorry I don't have a better solution for you on this one!

Also, in Settings > Reading, I have "Summary" selected under "For each article in a feed, show..."
But regardless of selecting that, it still showed the FULL text.

Note the setting label (on the left side) says, "For each article in a feed, show." That means the summary setting only applies to feeds.

There actually isn't a setting to turn all posts into summaries, though some themes do that automatically, it's currently a theme design choice. You also have the option to display just the first part of the post by using a more tag:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/more-tag/

Okay, on the Home page I want the food photos to be next to each other but they are stacking on top for some reason. They currently all have the alignment "none" selected.

That's the expected behavior for alignment=none. You probably want align=left. See if this page helps:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/image-alignment/

If you aligned images left and then the text below it started wrapping funny, you could edit the HTML in your post and add clear=both to the paragraph just after the images, like this:

<p style="clear: both;">text here</p>

Thank you, you are a wiz!

Okay, on the Home page I want the food photos to be next to each other but they are stacking on top for some reason. They currently all have the alignment "none" selected.

Also, in Settings > Reading, I have "Summary" selected under "For each article in a feed, show..."
But regardless of selecting that, it still showed the FULL text. After searching wp forums, I found that if I added the "Insert More Tag" where I wanted it to cut off, that would do the trick. So I did, but I don't like that now when you click "Read more of this post," the page automatically scrolls down to where it was cut off. Any suggestions?
