1. Map a new domain to my existing blog, and make it the primary domain. From the info on the FAQs, it sounds like people searching for the old site name and posts would be redirected to the new pages as long as I keep the old domain active.

2. Buy the Redirect upgrade.

Obviously #2 seems the more "official" option, but I can't figure out what it would accomplish that #1 doesn't, and it would cost more since I'd have to also buy and map the new domain name. Any ideas what the best move would be?

On the stores Domain page is says that I can by a domain, I don't know how this happened!

I see that you purchased a domain name through us yesterday. Refunds for domain names are available for up to two days after their purchase. If you'd like, we can cancel your current domain name purchase (losmontros.com) so that you can purchase a new domain name.

Please keep in mind that if you cancel losmontros.com, you may not be able to get it back in the future. Would that be okay with you?

If you want to change the title of the blog (the text displayed in the title bar of a web browser and displayed in the header for most themes) instead, you can do so under General Settings.

If you want to get rid of the “wordpress.com” part of your address, then you need to purchase a custom domain for your site. You can customize your domain with a custom domain and domain mapping upgrade at http://fearthedeer213.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php .

You might consider registering that domain name at Store > Domains in your dashboard, as you did with the first one. It's possible that your visitors will go to your original domain name by mistake - if you keep it, they'll be directed to your blog.

You're welcome to map as many domains to a single blog as you'd like, and can set the primary domain (the domain that appears in your links) at the Settings > Domains page.

It's not really possible to change a domain name, but since you registered it within the past 48 hours, we can cancel the domain and credit you for your purchase. You can then register whatever available domain you'd like. Please be aware, however, that there's no guarantee you'll be able to register your original domain name again.

If you really want to cancel your domain name, please let us know by August 6th, and confirm the domain name you'd like to cancel.

The down side is if someone does link you to a blog post - things can go around at the speed of the internet and email.

Please note: canceling your domain will mean that you will not be able to re-register it for 90 days (should you change your mind and want to use that domain again). That is a rule set by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and standard across all registrars.
