Reading the instructions in the article it looks like they have now made deleting the old address optional, and given you the option of buying the site redirect upgrade. I haven't tried it myself though!

I recommend instead simply creating a new blog from Manage My Blogs and then setting the old one to Private. You can export content out of that and import it to the new one easily from the dashboard Tools page.

You can change your custom domain 52at52.net to point to another blog as you see fit! It's pretty easy to point the domain to a different blog. If you'd like to point it at a new WordPress.com blog, you can simply transfer the mapping to your new blog.

Why am I charged all of a sudden? I was never charged for my original domain. Godaddy just forwarded it to wordpress but I never had to pay wordpress. What does it mean to "map" it? Wasn't I "mapping" my other domain?

Where is your domain registered now? Many registrars let you send the domain to a "under construction" page or you might be able to just redirect it to a blank blog - or no requirement to actually have the domain name go to a web site as far as I know.

I would like to hold onto my old domain name (since it is my actual name), but I don't want it to be linked to my wordpress blog. I've read the instructions about domain mapping, but haven't been able to find anything that specifically addresses my situation, that is; switching the domain name linked to my blog altogether. Am I missing something?
