The only themes we can use on WordPress.com are the ones you find here:
http://wordpress.com/themes/

or on your dashboard (the same themes):
dashboard—>appearance—>themes

The theme you found online is for
WordPress.ORG not
WordPress.COM

Have just found a new theme - Flambeau - on this site - http://www.freethemelayouts.com/

I have saved it, but when I go into my blog, I can't see how to apply it and change it from the current one.
Any ideas please?

Your custom menus will remain just as you had them in your old theme.

Here is a tip, if you are thinking about changing to a new theme but are not sure which (or even if you know which one but are uncertain how the new theme will look with your posts or how things will work), then why not start a private test blog?

You can export your live blog then import it into your private test blog. When you want to try a new theme, then only you will be looking at it while your readers continue to enjoy your "real" blog.

Currently using a theme with custom menus.

I want to change the theme, but I'm afraid to because I don't want to lose my custom menu.

Wondering if I were to select a new theme that supports custom menus if my menus will stay as is or if I'd need to reconstruct?

The way around this in the theme you're using is: copypaste the whole content of each post from the HTML editor into the Excerpt module.

I want to see the whole posts when a category or month is selected, any way around this?

We cannot edit themes or templates and CSS editing cannot be used to change theme functionality. What you can do is switch to a theme that provides full posts on Categories and Archives pages.

When viewing my site from the homepage, you see the whole post being displayed, but when you select a category or archived month, you only see the titles, and some text.

I want to see the whole posts when a category or month is selected, any way around this?

I just got my blog hosted on HostGator. When all the information was transferred, The theme I had on WordPress.com didn't transfer over to HostGator. It ended up with that original blue theme. How can I and how do I change the theme on my hosted site?

im having the same problem. Basically just starting a new blog and was snooping thru themes that would work best. once i decided upon blix the widgets (links, search and category cloud) that I had previously tried out in another theme, were showing they were already selected (because the add button was gone) but not showing up on the right side in "current widgets". I tried the final suggestion but it had no effect.

In the new theme, adding any other widget and saving changes should solve the problem. If not, first remove all widgets in the old theme, save changes, then switch.

And be careful with the text widgets: depending on the pair of themes, you may loose them when you switch, so first copy their content and paste it in a simple text editor.

I am interested in this one as when I tried to move http://neilphoto.wordpress.com/ from Andreas09 to something else, the same thing happened: "when I tried to add my widgets back, the ones I want to had that I had before do not have the option to "Add", and they are also not in my sidebar." They were still in place when I changed back to Andreas09, so for the moment I have left well alone.

I changed themes to try something new but didn't like it and went back to my old theme (Kubrick). But when I tried to add my widgets back, the ones I want to had that I had before do not have the option to "Add", and they are also not in my sidebar. Any idea how to get them back? There will be no change to the static pages regardless of theme.

You're welcome. Yes, it's true that the newer themes have not been reviewed by engtech.

The only thing that makes me want to change is the lack of a sidebar on individual posts.

(1) Do note that your content is not lost when switching themes. Provided you do not switch to a theme that is not widget equipped, at worst when you do switch themes the content in your sidebars just needs to be re-arranged as it will display in the default mode of the new theme you choose, until you adjust that.

(2) Most themes that are widget equipped do display sidebars on every page and not just the front page. The themes most like the one you have now that do display sidebars on every page IMO are K2 Lite and Kubrick.

Thanks. I do appreciate that and have already looked over those reviews. That is an excellent resource but does not provide a review of all. Also, as per my OP, you may see that I would like up-to-date advice from various bloggers. I find different opinions from a number of people highlights different things that may not have been covered by others.
