Hi,
I'm a language teacher and want to set up a blog as part of a class project and need help with the best way to go about this.
I need each student to be able to post things and for others to comment on them.

Does each student need to set up their own blog? If so, can i link all their blogs in one place so they all have access to each others?
Or ... do i have one class blog and each student can post directly onto that and then comment on each others?

What's the most simple and efficient way to do this? WHat are the limitations of each?

Many thanks for your help,
Ana

My suggestion on this would be to create a more specific rule that targets only the links in the content of posts and pages and that way you don't have to worry about adding a "class" to each link when you create them. Delete the a.blue you have and give this a try.

.entry-content a {

Hi...

I'm beginning to learn my way around this CSS, and I know a little information can be dangerous. :-)

I want to have only the links I add in a post to be a certain color, and be underlined. Not all the links, such as those in the widgets and the dates, categories, tags, etc, for each post. Only a link I add.

Which meant that:
a {
text-decoration: underline;
color: #244fb0;
}
didn't work for me, since it changed everything.

I created this class rule and added it:
a.blue {
color:#244fb0!important;
text-decoration:underline;
}
and in a post, I add class="blue" in the html < a > tag. It works! (Which is very exciting, in terms of the learning part.)

But... before I get too attached to this, will it cause problems later on (other than needing to remember to add the class="blue") or is there a better way?

Thank you!

I'm trying to remove the "By [Author]" portion on a posts page. Example: http://turfrugs.com/2012/02/14/custom-trailers/

Currently that
includes:
by
Administrator
I'm able to successfully add .meta-sep {display:none;} but when I add .author vcard {display:none;} it doesn't appear to be accepted and I'm wondering if this is due to the class having a space in the value.

Any recommendations? Thanks in advance!

If I added a height to #page of say, 500px, then I could your background. I tried doing a 100% height, but that didn't work, and setting a fixed height is no solution since the page heights can and will vary.

After some more experimenting, I've found that #primary is the most sufficient to use to cover most of the page. Initially it wouldn't cover the sidebar area so I gave #primary a padding to cover the rest of the page and positioned the sidebar over it. It worked very well, thanks again.

It's hard to say without seeing what other CSS you might have added. Can you link us to the blog you're working on?

Also, are you certain #page is the one you want to modify? If there are more specific divs overlaid on top of #page, then of course those ones won't be transparent unless you set transparency on the more specific divs too (like ou mentioned). For example, in Toolbox, #main has the background set to white. If you set #page as transparent, then the #main div will still be opaque white over the top of it unless you change #main too.

Use this to see what I mean:

#main {
background: none;
}
#page {
background: rgba(29, 50, 31, 0.7) !important;
}

Note that because of the way Toolbox is designed, it might not work well to turn the background off for #main though.

No matter how many different ways I specify this in my CSS, either via class, id, class > id, tag, etc. it will not change anything. If I place it on a more specific div such as #main, #content, .widget-area, it works just fine. Is there something special or specific about the #page .hfeed div in the Toolbox theme that I am missing? Why isn't my "!important" overriding this, whatever it happens to be?

Hello, I'm looking for some advice about using P2 or an alternative platform for a private blog for my students to keep the conversation from class going between face-to-face sessions.

I am thinking of using the P2 theme for two reasons. First, P2 can be configured as a private blog which is important because I want students to be able to explore their ideas as a community without worry about outside judgement or exposure. Second, P2 can be configured to send students email alerts for new posts.

Privacy:
None of my students have WordPress accounts yet, so I think I will have to have them each create a WP account so they can access the site, then add each one as an "author." Is there another platform that makes it easier to have security — that would allow students to log in, for instance, with an existing gmail account?

Alerts:
P2 currently allows users to subscribe to a blog and get notices of posts by email. This is great because students won't even need to sign in to yet another site to keep up with new posts. But: Alerts for new comments is not yet supported, so students cannot keep up with the conversation. Unless they sign in to the site they won't even know it is happening. These students are already required to use Desire2Learn (d2l), a learning management systems like Blackboard, so I'd be foolish to expect them to learn to navigate and monitor one more site.

I have read that alerts for comments "is coming," but I don't know when. Does anyone know of an alternative that already has these features integrated?

I hope developers will take note that there is great potential here for powerful software and that there is a need for this kind of product for educators and students.

- I tried to display a simple widget, i.e. the calendar, same problem : not displayed but in the page source
- Category widget is displayed correctly...

There is a high probability that the class widget widget_calendar is not found
same for

Ok. I can try that. I just thought it might be a default setting. The three or four themes I've tried all have that same drop down menu for class.

Thanks for all that!

I have managed to figure out the CSS code for links in my CSS editor.....what I am wondering about though is what I am guessing is the WordPress default link window that pops up when you are adding a hyperlink to text in a post. When you click the 'link' button in the toolbar you are offered a link editing box and the last option in the box is for 'class.' There is a dropdown menu there I am wondering what all the various options are do.

From what I can fathom these are the ways you can use CSS to style links.
a:link {color: #009900;}
sets the color of a link when no event is occurring

a:visited {color: #999999;}
sets the color a link changes to, when the user has already visited that URL

a:hover {color: #333333;}
sets the color a link changes to as the user places their mouse pointer over the link

a:focus {color: #333333;}
primarilly for the same purpose as the last one, but this one is for users that are not using a mouse and are tabbing through the links via there keyboards tab key, it sets the color a link changes to as the user tabs through the links

a:active {color: #009900;}
sets the color a link changes to as it is pressed

However, the Volunteers who help with CSS will give you a hand once this is moved to the CSS forum.
