I said that you could add a widget to highlight your latest comments.
He said that you could change to another theme which displays the word "comments" on each post rather than displaying the pastel colored balloon which readers might not understand indicates "comments."

You can use the widget in any theme. You can switch themes without loosing content, likes, comments, etc. Switching themes is like changing your dress: it just looks different but it's still you.
To change themes:
dashboard—>appearance—>themes
browse and preview to find one you like
—>activate

However, that will not change the facts that I provided above re: comment display on the front page of the blog unless you use P2.

Go to Dashboard > Appearance > Themes
browse themes until you find one you like and click "activate"
or type in the name of the theme you want to use and
click the "activate" link when it appears

After you change your theme all you need to do is go here Dashboard > Appearance > Widgets > Inactive Widgets and re-install them where you want them to appear. The widget contents and settings will be the same as they were prior to changing themes.
