Well, first off, lustrass.com IS lustrass.wordpress.com with the domain mapping. When you get your account at the new web hosting company set up, you will go into your domain management here and point the nameservers at the new web host. They will give you the DNS information. It will take about 24-72 hours for the DNS change to propagate through all the nameservers on the internet although typically it happens in 24 or less. Once you point the nameservers at the new host and disable the domain mapping here, your existing blog here will revert back to lustrass.wordpress.com and will still be intact.

After the domain has stabilized, you can install wordpress at the web host and then transfer your stuff over to the new blog.

One note on themes and plugins: KNOW your source. There is a growing number of places that are taking standard themes and plugins and inserting malware and virus's into them.

Caveat Emptor, let the buyer beware.

I have a complicated question and I'm going to try my best to explain it cuz I need answers:
- I started a blog in wordpress.com called lustrass.wordpress.com
- I found out it's cheap to map a domain through WordPress to I upgraded to lustrass.com
- I studided wordpress and found out how cool the plugins were, so I decided to self host my blog:
- I downloaded wordpress.org on my local machine
- Went to my old wordpress.com site and using tools I was able to export the content of my old blog, to the newly hosted one.
Question: Since I don't want to lose lustrass.com which is hosted on wordpress.com, how do I transfer my wodpress.org hosted on my pc to the other blog?

Or are you saying "I want certain functions on my blog and as far as I know they're only available via plugins?" Because those are two DIFFERENT things. We have a lot of people saying they want to leave to use All In One SEO, but if you do, the SEO you have is actually LESS than you have by staying here.

It is better to map the domain to wordpress.com than moving to wordpress.org. Private hosting might prove tpo be difficult as you need to do all the administration, and management. And you are getting 60 pageviews which is not enough to go for a wordpress.com VIP blog. You need to have a lot lot lot more page views per day for example like 5k page views or more. wordpress.com vip costs a lot and you need that much traffic. Give the time to stabilize, you have just started, create more content. In my opinion wordpress.com has very good collection of plugins to make a good blog. Also the you wordpress.com has a good range of themes.
I dont see any cause to move to private hosting at this moment, and and i dont see absolutely any cause to move to wordpress.com VIP blogs.
Let a year pass and see your traffic trent and the readership. If you have e domain and you have enough budget to map the domain (10$ appx) then i would tell you to map now. I have experienced some fall in traffic after mapping the domain. Previously i have some 150 to 180 page views, now it is 100 or below. Better map it now.

Probably other volunteers could provide you with a better suggestion .

Do you think I should do it?
Hi my name is Christian, the creator of tehbigwebtheory.com
I am currently using the free hosting supplied with wordpress.com and a domain name I bought of godaddy.com . I want to move to wordpress.org because I have been getting a lot comments about the look of the page, I also want the plugins supplied with .org . I write high quality content daily and after a week I am at about 60 page views daily. I am very motivated to continue with this blog until I have absolutely nothing more to write about. Which probably wont happen. I have a pretty good niche and am still trying to find my voice. Some say they like the informal writing style and some don't. I want to get a little bit more formal and clean up the website. All I want is for you to tell me do you think I should wait for the possibility of becoming a VIP on wordpress.com before I can finally add the things I want or do you think I should convert to .org . Note I have no training in things like DNS and FTP but if any of you can suggest good tutorials that would be appreciated. I am till scared to take the plunge into the unknown but also want my blog to be a success thanks for reading tell me what you think!

Got it! Thanks for the help!

Support Staff Response
Dear Leo,

Thank you for contacting Online Support. You can upload and test this and view your site via preview dns but it will not be live till you change the nameserves to ours.

Preview DNS lets you test your website prior to launch to ensure it displays and behaves properly on our hosting servers before modifying your domain's DNS record. This is beneficial when you are setting up a website for a domain that is currently active, either in your account or with another hosting provider.

When you enable Preview DNS, a subdomain is created on our server that temporarily houses your website. If Preview DNS is applied to http://www.coolexample.com, the preview URL is http://www.coolexample.com.previewdns.com.

NOTE: If you have multiple domains on your hosting account, preview them using http://www.coolexample.com.previewdns.com/path where path is the folder for your other domain.

Any internal links in the code are translated to point to the Preview DNS site. This process ensures that all paths can be tested appropriately prior to pointing your DNS record to our hosting servers.

NOTE: Some features such as Flash® and JavaScript do not work with Preview DNS.

To Enable Preview DNS or Preview Your Site

Log in to your Account Manager.

In the My Products section, select Hosting.

Next to the appropriate hosting account, click Manage Account.

In the Account Summary panel, click View to display your primary domain's DNS information.

If Preview DNS is not already enabled for your account, click Enable. If it has expired, click Renew.

If Preview DNS is enabled, click Preview my site.

NOTE: Preview DNS expires after 14 days but may be reactivated at any time.

To Make Your Site Live

Next to Primary Domain DNS, click View, and then click Make this site live.

NOTE: If your domain's DNS record is not under our control, you will not see the Make this site live button. You must manually update your A record with your hosting account's IP address for your site to publish to the Web.

Please let us know if we can assist you in any other way.

Sincerely,
Ben P.
Issue : Hi Godaddy,

Ok so I have my wordpress.com blog right now, Leopahrens.wordpress.com. I also
have a domain name LeoAhrens.com that is used for my blog. I recently
decided to pay for a couple months of web hosting on GoDaddy.com to
try wordpress.org out and see if it worth paying extra money for. So I
want to be able to work on a .org website but I don't want to get rid
of my wp.com site until I'm positive I want to pay the extra. Idealy I
want to make my .org site while my .com site is up and running under
my domain name, then switch when the site is ready. Is there any way I can do that?

Basically my question is; Is there anyway I can set up a wordpress.org
blog while using my domain name (leoahrens.com) for my .com site? I
can't afford to buy another domain and I don't want to have my website
go offline for the time it takes to make my new site.

Thanks

The thing is, you could switch the domain name over to the .ORG site, and then make your blog here at .COM a subdomain of that domain using CNAME, but that would break all the links to your blog here on the search engines and such.

That's a no go. We cannot access the template files, let alone, edit our templates at wordpress.com as tis is a shared blogging environment. We are all working on a multiuser blogging platform and that means that very blog "wearing" the same theme is, in essence, using the same template. Consequently, only Staff can access and edit those templates because whatever changes they make will be evident in all blogs "wearing" the same theme.

As I have both wordpress.com blogs and a wordpress.org install I can tell you right now that you are not going to find an of-the-rack ready to go wordpress.org theme that's coded to include two images in the Title line (a text field) of any theme. If you hire a coder then you may be able to get what you want, but I guarantee that search engine spiders are not going to be expecting to find images in what is a text field and what is in fact THE most important link in your entire blog. IMO mucking about with THE most important URL in your entire blog and risking search spider confusion when they discover images in a text filed is an ill thought out plan. Why don't run that "idea" by Matt Cutts of Google and see what he has to say about what the search spider response would be and what consequences may ensue?

I believe you mean a favicon AKA blavatar and that is possible. See the link I posted above.

Fair comment

What i want to do is put two images in the title bar above the header image, where the blog title is. A logo and a picture of me.

It would certainly be far better a solution for me if it were possible to do that on wp.com
I focused my question towards transfering to wp.org because my understanding is that it just isn't possible to put images into that title bar.

If anyone knows different, I would love to know!

The title bar is where the URL for your blog goes. This link is THE most important link in the entire blog. Why you would want to inject 2 images into that URL is beyond me.

Perhaps what you really mean is you want a favicon/blavatar > to appear in the upper browser bar just before the http://
If that's the case then see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/avatars/blavatars/

The title bar is for text. If you already knew CSS well and bought the paid upgrade, you could probably do this, but not if you don't already know your CSS and have the upgrade.

Do NOT buy it if you don't already know CSS, because you're on your own with it. We've had a rash of people saying "I bought the upgrade to change this one thing, now what do I do?" and basically, their option is to wait an indeterminate amount of time till one of the two bloggers who knows CSS here answers or to go to Google.

Also, my two cents: that would look REALLY messy.
