I'm afraid that you are powerless to stop this rating problem aside from disabling it.

We cannot block or delete subscribers from public blogs. Everyone on the internet can view and follow any public blog.

However, if you blacklist be aware that you could be affecting legitimate commenters as well. IP addresses have not been unique for nigh unto 15 years now. ISPs place hundreds of us in the same IP block. Moreover, using the blacklist is useless when people can get a new IP or new email address in no time flat.

First, I made comments require email verification. It's more work, but it's affective. But then the same people (I'm assuming that it's the same guy, I had 670 views yesterday and only 14 Visitors, and most of those views were on the same page) started down-voting the comments, including those of those who are actually trying to have a meaningful discussion.

THEN when I took away the comment ratings, now he just keeps rating articles one star over and over again. I don't know who this person is, but I am incredibly sick of his antics, and I'm not sure how to take care of them. What can I do? (I can get rid of ratings, but I really like them).

Frankly, I wouldn't bother with this at all. I refuse to post obscenity on my blogs. I refuse to edit comments. I moderate every comment instead and I post a comment policy.

If the comments are difficult for you to handle - as noted above set to moderate all then find a friend to deal with the comments - they would need to be Editor but not Admin - also you will receive email notice of the comments so set them up to go into a folder you don't need to look at often

Please be aware that no one has control over your blog and what's posted on it except you. WordPress.com cannot protect you from receiving comments you don't appreciate. Provided you do not post any personal information on your blog or anywhere else online this troll will not be arriving on your doorstep.

For trolls, you can “blacklist” them at Settings > Discussion toward the bottom of that page. Enter their email address, their username, and if they included it, their website. That will automatically send them to moderation so that their comments do not appear on the blog. Do note though that if they are determined, they can use a different email address or username to get around that. Also, do not put their IP address in the blacklist. IP addresses are no longer unique, and you might end up blocking legitimate visitors. Also, all they would have to do is go to a wi-fi hot spot, or connect via a different ISP and they could get around that.

One other thing I would suggest is to set your blog so that first time commenters are held in moderation till approved, then from that point forward they will not need approval. Settings > Discussion. The next step on that of course is to set it so that all comments are held in moderation until approved. That way you are in control, and they might just get tired and go elsewhere after a while.

I have had a public blog on Word Press since August 2009 and never had any problems. Recently, a man signed up to follow my blog via email and he began leaving somewhat aggressive comments. Today he writes that he is a convicted stalker, and I googled him (as he suggested in his comment) and indeed, that is the case for this man.

That said, what do I do ? Are there any ways Word Press can protect me from this kind of attention ?

They do, of course, take down blogs that violate the Terms of Service.

If you don't feel comfortable having strangers view your blog, just set it to Private. In all likelihood that is what this person has done with their blog, so that's why you can't Follow it.

I guess this person hasn't commented on anything on my blog. But they haven't even said they "like" any of my posts, either. They just started following and nothing else -- a sort of silent watcher. This kind of creeps me out.

Thanks to Time thief for answering my question most thoroughly, although I'd like some reassurance from wordpress that, if necessary, they would take down any dangerously dodgy blogs to safeguard the interests of others.

Wish you had said that up front. No you can't delete the email subscriber but here are are brief instructions for your followers re:unsubscribing

1. They can click the "unsubscribe" link on the emails of the post they receive at the very bottom of the emails.

2. Or they can go here > http://wordpress.com/#!/read/edit/ and locate this:
"Get new posts by email" in the drop-down menu they have these choices:
never
instantly
daily
weekly

3. They can also click the "x" next to any blog there to unfollow it and no longer receive posts in their Reader or by email.

Thanks for your help, folks. The problem is that someone is sending me ALL CAPS comments demanding "DELETE ME FROM YOUR MAILING LIST!!!!!" I'd be happy to do so, but I can't find a way to do it. Neither can I even find this person's name on the list of subscribers to my blog. So I don't know what to tell them.

Go to your site stats page and click “Totals, Followers & Shares”
Click the Blog link under the number and the Site Stats » My Followers page will open. Click the Email Followers link.

The subscriber stats on your site stats page show you all the users that have active email subscriptions to your blog using the built-in email notification system on WordPress.com. They don’t include users that subscribed using a third-party subscription service or using RSS.

P.S. You cannot obtain any information that personally identifies any of your followers. This is a privacy issue. What's required for registering here is an email address only and that email address is for many of us a throwaway email address.

Thank you, auxclass, for making it clear to me about the scam. I thought it was, too. TimeThief, don't be so quick to flame me. How else am I to describe the scam spam than the way I did it? Can you explain it without having to copy and paste it? I can't.

It's a scam and spam and is not from WordPress.COM - just clear the spam box - if something like that gets past Akismet then mark it as Spam and that will teach Akismet to send it to the Spam box

By posting that spam here you furthered the spammer's intent - you advertised it and that's exactly what the spammer wants.

The vast and overwhelming majority of "information" on the internet is spam. Over 80% of all so-called comments submitted to .wordpress.com blogs every day is spam. Akismet is a very good spam filter. Mark spam as spam - never delete it and get on with your blogging.

I would like to block this entire chain of spam
