I can see Podz's IP address. :)

TT, any time you visit somewhere on the internet, usually the webserver that gives you the site you're visiting records your IP address, the date, the time, where you came from (the referrer), and what browser you are using. The little script that he or she is running just takes that information and gives it back to you.

Basically you need to put in the 'comments_template();' code into the default theme's Page section.

I have to agree, it's not that hard, but then we have to bear in mind that the developers' time is severely limited. I wasn't aware that they were accepting theme patches now: how should we go about submitting them? Feedback? The contact form? The fairly moribund-looking WP MU Trac?

ok - i worked out one way round the problem:

i made a text widget and titled it 'any comments / questions'

i made a new Post which i've just left in the default category: the post is called 'comments and questions' and i've written 'please leave you general comments / questions / suggestions here' and of course, becasue it is a Post it has a Comment box underneath.

then: copy the web address of this new post as it appears live on the blog, and create a link to it in the text widget (you can write html in the text widget)

any other suggestions more than welcome though cos this is ok for one or two text widgets down the side but doesn't solve the problem that in 'Neat' there is no option to leave comments on Pages (and i have lots of pages!!)

i think the best solution is for themes to have 'commentable' and 'uncommentable' page templates. it's really not that hard.

although with .com templates, i can't see it really mattering to anyone if their pages have a 'comments closed' notification at the bottom, so maybe all pages should be commentable, and people should use the 'allow comments' checkbox.

Best bet would be the theme you asked about in the other thread as it allows Pages to have comments. There is no method to edit themes here as we share them between all users. You could do this and pretty much anything else though with a copy of WordPress hosted in your own webspace though as you would have control over your own theme.

So, I've read and found the answer to my question about comment capability on pages. Apparently that is theme dependant. Now I'm wondering if there might be a work-around to that without switching themes? I just settled on one I like and would rather not switch again right now.

Anyway, what I want is a "What I'm Reading" page/post that will not get burried under future posts that people can comment on to give their opinions on books I have listed. Any suggestions on how this might be accomplished with a text widget, or some other idea?

Thanks!

I just went and converted all my static Pages to categories and thus got rid of the swamp of Page names at the top of the screen — an improvement. I copied the contents of each of my former static pages and pasted it into a post on the main page, and gave it a category so it could be listed as a discrete entity. The posts (which are fairly static) can be commented on, and can be found readily by using that category list.

Btw, those old "Pages" weren't deleted yet, just marked "Private" which reduces the Page list. Some of the corresponding posts need tweaking, where they were linked to other Pages, since those links are now "404".

This seems like a solution. It's certainly closer to how the WP blog was supposed to work. I wasn't using categories at all, before this.

Still trying to figure out how to use that clickable "More" button in the posts.
