Would that be Peter Noone? Or Craig Noone? If either one is paying you, no you can't post the links.

In that case, you probably can if you're not getting anything in return.

@kymlee, some bloggers are current or former professional journalists. Others are citizen or aspiring journalists. Because blogs are increasingly competitive with old media (newspapers, TV) for scoops and breaking news these days, credibility and accountability are a major issue. Should bloggers follow the same ethical standards as journos? I do, but I come from a journalism background

The Society of Professional Journalists has a Code of Ethics which is worth taking a look at. It says basically: 1) Seek Truth and Report It. 2) Minimize Harm. 3) Act Independently. 4) Be Accountable.

#3 is pertinent to your question:
Act Independently
Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public's right to know.

Journalists should:

—Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
— Remain free of associations and activities that may compromise integrity or damage credibility.
— Refuse gifts, favors, fees, free travel and special treatment, and shun secondary employment, political involvement, public office and service in community organizations if they compromise journalistic integrity.
— Disclose unavoidable conflicts.
— Be vigilant and courageous about holding those with power accountable.
— Deny favored treatment to advertisers and special interests and resist their pressure to influence news coverage.
— Be wary of sources offering information for favors or money; avoid bidding for news.

well I wasn't referring to writing paid content at this site, I am fully aware that it is not allowed and I have no issue with that. I was merely stating that after reading several other blogs pertaining to this topic whether they be at wordpress, blogger, or somewhere else in the infinite internet, and I noticed that no one had really touched on the actual reason why blogging for compensation is deemed immoral etc by the vast majority of the blogging community. I wanted to find out what all of your opinions were on this topic. Because there's no better way to find out than asking people who probably know!

I am not interested in get rich quick schemes lettershometoyou and I do write for a hobby, you can see that in my blog... and Raincoaster, the reason I asked the question here in this forum was to get other people's thought on the subject. Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression that the "Off Topic" forum was for topics to interact with other users who have opinions or thoughts about any given subject.

To clear the air, I am in no way attacking this site or any others, just trying to find an explanation from more experienced bloggers. I am new to the concept and I figured in order to find out why something in the blogging community works or doesn't work, so on and so forth, this would be the place to go.

Sorry for asking.

Timethief, thank you for the information, you are always very helpful. I was aware of this specific sites rules, but its good to know that it is not always looked down upon to submit your writing for compensation. I don't personally believe in spamming, or blogging about things that don't really interest you just for the almighty dollar, but if you enjoy writing about a topic unbiasedly then whatever you choose to do with your "work of art" is fine.

Thank you all for your input.

Since the Phoenicians created a written alphabet and writing there have been writers (scribes) who are paid to write. There is nothing morally wrong with being paid to write (blog), provided the blogging platform your blog is on allows for paid blogging and/or income from blogger initiated advertising and affilitae schemes.

This platform at wordpress.COM does not allow wordpress.com blogs to be used to drive traffic to third party sites, and only allows bloggers to advertise what they actually produce themselves unless they are VIP bloggers
http://wordpress.com/tos/
http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/advertising/
http://wordpress.com/vip-hosting/

Consequently, it's only bloggers at wordpress.COM who choose to ignore their legal responsibilities by violating the TOS and/or policies, which amounts to breaching contracts, who have moral issues.

The reality is that free hosted blogging platforms like Blogger (blogspot) that allow do blogger initiated advertising, and affiliate schemes, and pay per post, etc. are over run with spammers, scammers, plagiarists and blog scraping sploggers.

If you are an American then the Federal Trade Commission consumer protection regulations aimed at creating transparency in advertising as over and against false advertising now apply.

The main concern is “transparency” ie. bloggers clearly declaring their relationship with their sponsors, and disclosing to their readers that they were compensated for the review when they are in receipt of a free product in exchange for their testimonial, or have received some other kind of benefit. You are required to have a Disclaimer statement on your blog and you can create one free of charge http://disclosurepolicy.org/
The regulations are found here http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2009/10/endortest.shtm

I earn part of my income by undertaking research and writing projects under contracts with non-disclosure clauses. The work I produce is NOT published on blogs.

I have no issues with bloggers being paid for their written opinions provided those opinions are delivered within the confines of the law not only as it pertains to disclosure but also as it pertains to defamation (libel).

So I've been browsing the internet and reading about the moral wrongs of paid blogging. Now I'm not so sure I understand what is wrong about it, I mean I'm sure most everyone has considered getting paid for their writing, right?
I know I have. I also understand that mot paid bloggers end up being spammers and they write in favor of the advertising companies who give them guidelines to write to... and it's usually in favor of the company who is paying out. I can see the problem there.

What I don't get is the face that people like you and I, who write our thoughts, or on a specific topic/category, are considered sleazy if we ask for a little compensation for our words. IMO, if it's offered, to obtain a side income, people should have the option to write their OWN opinions about whatever the heck they want, and not get hassled by search engines or other people.

I don't know if I am perceiving this topic "correctly", but nevertheless, this is how I'm seeing it.
I'd like to know your thoughts and opinions on this. Do any of you feel the same? Do you think that it is immoral to accept any kind of compensation for your "online" opinion?

Take care fellow bloggers!

Kymlee

oh wait.. i just checked out our rules here on WP, my intention
was not to Spam at all, they were going to pay me for blog post like I'm writing now, like my personal opinion. I wouldnt write get rich quick stuff of those
types of "reviews." I was under the impression that it was blogging
like movie review style, which is acceptable on this site correct?
So it would still be a no-go on here? Or does it truly depend on
exactly what I am blogging about?

Just trying to be 100 percent clear. Thanks again
