I think you may prefer to hire a web host and set up a WordPress.org install. The reason I say that is because we cannot edit templates or themes on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

One one hand, none of the characteristic "blog" features likes categories, tags, authors, dates, etc. can be removed from a free hosted WordPress.com blog without purchasing an annually renewable custom design upgrade and doing the required CSS editing.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/

One that other hand, one can hack a WordPress.org theme free of charge. Have you read this comparison? WordPress.com and WordPress.org: The Differences

Thanks for the response. I will check out the links you sent me. But in response to your comments about blogs, I know the importance of a blog and have a blog on my site. But I am putting up a site for my consulting business so I have to build an entire website with information about our services. That will take about 12 pages one of which will be a very active blog page.

So I'm just looking for a easy step by step way to do this not a lecture about blogging. I have to go one step at a time. So again thanks for the info and I check out your links to see if it gives me what I am looking for.

Thank you for responding to my question. OK. Here is exactly what I am looking to do. I have build a 12 page website in Intuit. The Intuit program is very good but it has some limitation. I was told that WordPress is very good and can probably handle the things I am looking for. I was also told that your program is more friendly to search engines.

So I want to build a complete website. At this time I do not want any particular URL. I just want to work with the program and see how easy it is to build a website and how versatile it is. If I can build my website the way I want, I will then get a domain and publish the site.

So far in trying to get started I keep getting directed to designing a blog. So how do I get set up for a full website or what am I missing?

I hope that is clear enough but let me know if you need more info.

Pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ are static and are for content that rarely changes. They sit outside of the blog structure and you cannot post to multiple pages in any blog.

There is only one main page for posts http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/ in a blog and all posts will display on the main blog page. There is no way to exclude posts from the main posts (blog) page. The front page of the blog by default will display your posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. If you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, then you can create a static front page “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts.
Choice 1 static front page
Choice 2 running page for all posts on front page
Which do you choose? It’s one or the other.
If you choose a static front page then you have to create two pages as I said above. After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

Can you please ask a staff person to assist me. Or direct me on how to get to live chat. There was a little live chat on the bottom right of my screen but I can no longer find it.

The problem is this: I signed up for a blog and purchased an upgrade before I really understood how blogs worked. The next day, I wanted to change the name and domain name. I contacted support and I was told the original blog was being deleted and that I could create a new blog. I created the new blog and purchased the the new domain name.

Somehow, I created three identical blogs with the following addresses thehomesickchef.com, Thehomesickchefdotcom1.wordpress.com and Thehomesickchefdotcom2.wordpress.com. I was able to delete Thehomesickchefdotcom2.wordpress.com. However, I have been unable to delete Thehomesickchefdotcom1.wordpress.com because the upgrade package was applied to it. I would like the upgrade package applied to Thehomesickchef.com.

I have requested this several times via support and someone even said it was "done", but it seems it has not been done. I cannot do any custom designing on Thehomesickchef.com and I am being prompted to upgrade for $30. So, can my upgrade me moved to the blog I want to use or not? If so, can you please ask a staff person to do it. If not, it would be helpful to know if it can be done or not so I can figure out plan B. Thank you

This isn't what I expected. How do I cancel?

I'm not sure what you expected but there are millions of bloggers on WordPress.com. Staff don't orientate new bloggers individually. That's what the video on the dashboard, the tutorial and support documentation provide. If you clearly state what it is that you need help with then you will get it. However, if you wish to get a refund for upgrades see here please > http://en.support.wordpress.com/upgrades/#refunds
