Hi.

I am Dian Ara, a blogger from Indonesia. On my blog (dianaraquest.wordpress.com) I share book reviews, movie reviews, videogames reviews as well as personal journals. I am a noob about internet law, especially copyright law. Recently I stumbled upon Creative Commons. I was captivated by the idea of free sharing culture so I decided to put an Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0) license on my blog. It means (please CMIIW) everyone is allowed to share, to remix, and to use my blog posts for both personal and commercial, under 2 conditions: They have to attribute to me, and if they alter, transform, or build upon the posts, they must have the same license as mine.

This led to another striking question: What if those videogames screenshots, movie posters, book covers and trailers (YouTube videos) that I have been using for my reviews are all copyright infringement? They are not mine, and they are not licensed the same as my license, amirite? :|

I have been spending this week to browse through my older posts. Editing them one by one, deleting images and pictures I had taken from random search result on Google Images. I have replaced some with CC BY-SA 3.0-licensed pictures from Flickr. My effort is still halfway through, and I am concerned about these posts:
<h2>A Must Watch: Shirokuma Cafe</h2>
On that post I embedded some fan-made YouTube videos, with scenes home-recorded from the anime. Am I allowed to embed such non-official videos?
<h2>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I</h2>
I used the movie poster as the post's image, but I never asked permission from Warner Bros. (the movie's publisher). Am I allowed to do so?
<h2>Co-Op Gaming Done Right, Resident Evil 5 Changed My Life</h2>
On this post I use screenshots taken directly from the game. They are not screenshots officially released by Capcom, and I definitely did not ask for their permission. Am I allowed to do so?

I googled about copyright law and fair use, but frankly, those legal wordings confused me. If you don't mind explaining this to me, thank you very much. And have a fun day. :)

It's commendable that you are giving credit/attribution to the author by linking back to their photo, but it sounds like you might be hotlinking images, which IMO is never a good idea.

Besides the ethical considerations (bandwidth theft, etc.), you're giving control over the content you display on your site to someone else. If their site goes down, your site is affected. Also, by way of example, there was a recent thread on the board where a hotlinked image a WP.com member had put in a widget was repurposed in a way he didn't expect. http://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/unwanted-stop-sopa-banner-on-my-blog?replies=20

Thanks for the reply. No I am not using the code from Flickr directly, I'm using the WordPress editor to create those posts and then clicking the little image icon to add stuff (from the web if necessary).

I guess I was hoping for something a little more integrated, and that might work with other sites as well (Google Photos, SmugMug, etc).

If you are using the code provided by Flickr under the "Grab the HTML/BBCode", then you are already fulfilling Flickr's requirements as the original image will link back to the Flickr member's image. If you wish to include attribution, you can simply add "Photo by XXX and released under a CC BY-NC-ND 3.0 License" or whatever that license may be.

Hi --

I would like to use images from Flickr in my posts but be a good net citizen and obey the appropriate Creative Commons rules associated with the image. Is there a way to do this automatically on WordPress.com? For example, if I embed an image that points to Flickr, automatically note that attribution is required by the CC license and add that as a caption or hover text on the image.

Thanks,

Well, this is a peculiar thing: I moved my calendar widget from the sidebar area to the footer widget area, and all of a sudden everything that isn't linking to content on my blog (as in, the bottom months with arrows, and singular dates on which I've posted things), is one big link to the creative commons webpage!

Anyone have any idea how to revert the calender to just black and non-linking, outside of the dates on which I actually post content?

I've tried taking the widget off, and inserting a new one from the main widget selection, but to no avail. It also seems to not be a problem in the sidebar.

Raincoaster is right, this questions regarding licensing and what to put in each field are questions for creative commons. There are some other questions mixed in there though - it would be clearer if you just asked one each post.

1) t would be nice to jot down a "More Permissions URL" for anybody who wished to obtain information about clearing rights that are not cleared by my license. I would imagine the easiest way to do this would be to use the same URL as I would type in for "Attribute Work To URL" - which is, simply, just my website.

An alternative that I use is a separate license page, which is linked from the main page.

2) Is it unwise to use the e-mail address that I used to register with WordPress.com? Or should I just create another e-mail address that is specific to the aforementioned inquiries? Or - is this just not the best thing to do at all?

I would never put a permanent email address on your website, it will get hit by more and more spam as time goes on. I use a temporary address from Gishpuppy that I change when i get to much spam. Another alternative is the contact form

3) I attempted to go over the whole "Google Apps" thing, but in light of my exhaustion and the ostensible complexity of the whole ordeal - not to mention the fact that I truly don't understand what I am to gain by the whole "e-mail and domain being together thing".

If you don't need or want it then don't do it! It is fairly complex, though the instructions are good. Personally I do have some @my-blog.org email addresses because I sometimes post to lists and people as the blog owner rather than using my personal email account.

I don;t think that this is the same question. In answer to this question you have two different recommendations:

1) The boilerplate example from WordPress, assuming that you want to prevent all use of your work by others, apart from legal fair use.

2) The creative commons license, which gives additional rights that you select, for example allowing non-commercial use if they credit your site.

Having both would be more than confusing, it would be contradictory. If you use the creative commons license you should use their wording and not the boilerplate text.

In the Support article on "Preventing Content Theft" http://en.support.wordpress.com/prevent-content-theft/, the author recommends placing a "Copyright Notice" in the sidebar of the blog. It provides an example notice that can be used: (© [Full Name] and [Blog Name], [Current Year or Year Range]. Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this blog’s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full and clear credit is given to [Your Name] and [Your Blog Name] with appropriate and specific direction to the original content.) ... Now, the author also recommends obtaining a Creative Commons license, which allows others to share material under certain conditions. My question is this: Does having the aforementioned notice in addition to the CC License create confusion? Or, is the license merely the indicator of what can be taken as "authorized use" of one's material? What I mean is this: Does the license specify terms that I have authorized? And if so, is this message made clear? - Brian

Yet, in light of my choices, it would be nice to jot down a "More Permissions URL" for anybody who wished to obtain information about clearing rights that are not cleared by my license. I would imagine the easiest way to do this would be to use the same URL as I would type in for "Attribute Work To URL" - which is, simply, just my website. In light of this, I would need to place some kind of contact information somewhere on the front page. Is it unwise to use the e-mail address that I used to register with WordPress.com? Or should I just create another e-mail address that is specific to the aforementioned inquiries? Or - is this just not the best thing to do at all? I attempted to go over the whole "Google Apps" thing, but in light of my exhaustion and the ostensible complexity of the whole ordeal - not to mention the fact that I truly don't understand what I am to gain by the whole "e-mail and domain being together thing" - Ah! ... What is the point of "Google Apps" anyway? Surely, to go through the motions of creating some kind of e-mail address that would be mapped to my domain isn't what I am looking for here? Is it? ... Thanks to anybody for their time. - Brian

Basically a creative commons licence is one that allows others to use your work in a derivative or commercial way or as is and still gives you the actual ownership of the piece of work and credit for producing it originally. Of course with the internet if someone wants to steal anything from your blog, they'll steal it, a licence will not stop them.
You own the copyright to any original material you create anyway so it's not necessary.

@pinky200011: This is how to make a copyright sign on the HTML editor. You enter &copy; and you'll get this: ©
On the visual editor, you can press and hold the left ALT key while entering 0169 on the numeric keypad.

I'll leave the other question regarding copyright to a more copyright-savvy volunteer.
