Just out of curiosity, what is the exact URL you are using when you see the jumbled view? Note that the CSS is compressed intentionally when displayed in a browser, and clicking the "theme's CSS" link as shown in http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/#editing-options is what you should be clicking if you want to view the non-compressed CSS formatted for better readability.

Thanks for the input. Yeah I've been viewing it on chrome. Perhaps I should try safari and see if it makes a difference.

When I use the css editor or view the existing style sheet, it is nice and orderly as shown in that support document both on the blogs where I have the css upgrade and those where I do not. This is true on all of the computers I use including the ipad.

The same is not necessarily true when viewing the style sheet in a variety of html/CSS view software s and addons on my computer (unrelated to wordpress.)

Have you viewed it on a second computer to see if there might be something in your local environment that has caused it to look wonky? It would sure make it maddening to control and view your editing in that situation.

Trying to preview CSS editor before purchasing upgrade. When I look at it, it is one large jumbled paragraph, not like the example on this page, http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/editing-css/ Will it change the editor layout and spacing when I purchase the upgrade? Thanks in advance.
