Maybe your best bet is posting to the premium themes support forum. Bold News is a premium theme and you paid for support direct from the theme designer. You have also edited the CSS and that could be a factor. Read-access to the premium themes forum is now open to all users so you can search to see if your question has been previously asked and answered there. The premium theme forums are at http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/ with separate sections for each theme. http://premium-themes.forums.wordpress.com/forum/bold-news

    If you are not successful when searching there is a link for the specific Premium Theme support forum for your theme under Appearance -> Themes in your blog’s Dashboard, but do note that the premium theme must be active and you must be signed in as the user who purchased it in order to see it and post to it.

You're welcome.
a) I can't see because your blog is set to private.
b) To explain my "isn't really possible": The dimensions of featured images are set in PHP, not CSS, so you cannot change them. You can use CSS editing to make the images show full-width, but they won't be real larger versions, they will be the default ones blown-up, which means terrible quality.

You aren't going to be able to duplicate that. To do that you need some sort of scripting (they use AJAX) and we cannot use script here at WordPress.com for security reasons. I'm not sure what to suggest since I can't think of anything close to that really.

You can choose a theme with a post slider at the top, or you can implement a slideshow on the main page, but that isn't going to be very close to what you are seeing with that theme.

CSS is theme specific and the theme you are using does not use "#container, and the way the theme is designed, you have to target a more specific selector for changing the content width. In addition, since your theme is a responsive design, you don't want to set a "width" you want to set a "max-width" so that the theme will still respond properly to varying screen sizes, such as on smartphones an tablets. Instead of what you have, add the following.

#main {
