Every time I click the details and theme says 'customisable header' and I go to it it then says you have to pay for the theme to ge the option...When I first blogged with WordPress there were a good range of free themes with customisable headers to choose from.

Not very impressed. I might have to move to blogger.... :(

How can I widen the margins (empty one inch on each side)?

Keep in mind inches aren't really a good measure on the web. The margins will vary depending on how big the screen is when you view the page. So, think of it in terms of setting a (relatively) fixed size for the main content area, and then the margins will be totally different depending on what size screen each person uses to view the site.

To clarify, is your real goal to entirely change the width of the main container, including the header?

Here is a block of CSS used in a previous forum reply that is an example for changing all of the colors in the Twenty Eleven menu. You should leave the font-family rule from this example out for your case:

Moving the menu right is a little tricky if you haven't done it before. I bet you want it centered and not right-aligned though. Here is an example that will center the menu in the Twenty Eleven theme:

#access {
	text-align: center;
}
#access ul {
	display: inline-block;
}

Is it possible with the CSS upgrade? If so, what is the code to make the change?

You could probably setup the slider and then attach an image as a background to one of the elements in the header and add padding to give it some space.

Also, does CSS allow you to add custom social buttons? Can they be put at the top of the page? Thank you.

Social buttons can be added via a widget and then moved using CSS absolute positioning.

1) Image mapping is easy when it comes to a regular image inserted in a post or a page.
2) Making the whole header image a mailto: link is posible, but it would be unexpected, annoying, and deceptive.

No, that is not possible at wordpress.com, and given how the web has evolved, people would not expect the link on a header image would be a mailto. They would expect it to be a link to the main page of the site.

From the design of your header image, you would probably want to do some image mapping instead, but again this is difficult to do here at WordPress.com.

I would like to use both a custom header and the content slider in Widely theme. But it seems at though you can't do both. Am I wrong? Is it possible with the CSS upgrade? If so, what is the code to make the change? Also, does CSS allow you to add custom social buttons? Can they be put at the top of the page? Thank you.

The blog I need help with is methenmommy.wordpress.com

I see you figured this out using the following custom CSS:

body.custom-background {
	padding-top: 291px;
}
html {
	margin-top: 13px !important;
}

Nice work!

If you also wanted to pull the content area up a little higher, you could add something like this too:

#page {
	margin-top: -2em;
}

I like what thepioneerwoman.com did with the size and position of their blog's header --- so that it is flush with the top of the screen, wider than the body, and the body comes up into it some. How is that done?

Hi jwschu,

The behavior you mentioned is just one of the ways background images work in a responsive environment.
