This will remove the background color for captioned images:

How can I widen the margins (empty one inch on each side)?

Keep in mind inches aren't really a good measure on the web. The margins will vary depending on how big the screen is when you view the page. So, think of it in terms of setting a (relatively) fixed size for the main content area, and then the margins will be totally different depending on what size screen each person uses to view the site.

To clarify, is your real goal to entirely change the width of the main container, including the header?

Moving the menu right is a little tricky if you haven't done it before. I bet you want it centered and not right-aligned though. Here is an example that will center the menu in the Twenty Eleven theme:

To adjust the spacing in the header, I would recommend uploading a header image that has been properly sized to 1000 pixels by whatever height you want before you upload it on the Appearance → Header page. The space should adjust accordingly.

Is it possible with the CSS upgrade? If so, what is the code to make the change?

You could probably setup the slider and then attach an image as a background to one of the elements in the header and add padding to give it some space.

Also, does CSS allow you to add custom social buttons? Can they be put at the top of the page? Thank you.

Social buttons can be added via a widget and then moved using CSS absolute positioning.

When you say image mapping is difficult to do on wordpress.com is it still possible? If so can you provide any help on how I could do this?

From the design of your header image, you would probably want to do some image mapping instead, but again this is difficult to do here at WordPress.com.

I'm using the Oxygen theme on a wordpress hosted blog and would like to make the custom header image I've uploaded a mailto: link when a user clicks on it, is this possible to do?

I've purchased the custom CSS as well so can amend that if needed.
