I cannot get a custom menu to show up in the right sidebar, but was able to add a couple of other widgets.

I see you found it and added a custom menu titled "Fearless Acts of Cooking" to your sidebar. Nice work!

Also, I couldn't create the top navigation.

If you want to use separate menus, first make sure you have saved more than one menu on your Appearance → Menus page. Then go to the Appearance → Menus → Manage Locations tab, and make sure you've setup the one you want to use for the top navigation as the "Primary Menu."

Thanks to both of you for your help... but I have to admit, I'm new to wordpress and cannot get to the editor following the path above. I get to "customize" but there is no CSS there. I have not upgraded Delicacy from the basic free theme; could that be the reason? I also found this article (http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#custom-css) that says you can preview a custom design with changes before you purchase and I tried to do that for the CSS and couldn't get a text box on that tab.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for any guidance; it's much appreciated.

The same exact CSS won't necessarily work the same way if it's copy and pasted into a new location. The advanced (replace) themes CSS option was intended to be used when you want to wipe the theme CSS out completely and write your own from scratch. If you're not doing that, you shouldn't use the advanced option unless you know how to rewrite CSS for a new location.

Did you paste the entire CSS into the CSS edit window? If so, that is the problem. The CSS uses what is called a relative URL (relative to the location of the CSS file) and your custom CSS is stored in a different location so that means the relative URLs in the original CSS break.

At WordPress.com, what you want to do is to put only the specific selectors, and only the specific declarations you are adding or changing into the CSS edit window.

In the theme you are using, as in most WordPress themes, the post/page titles are set with more specific selectors in the CSS. In your theme, you would need to do the following. I've changed the color to black, and you can adjust the font size as you desire.

.hentry h1, .list-post-item h2 a {
color: #000000;
font-size: 22px;
}

There are two selectors - .hentry h1 and .list-post-item h2 a - that I've used. These don't show up in the CSS. I created these from looking at the markup (html page source) and the current CSS so that I could specifically target the post titles for you and not affect any other h1 or h2 elements in the theme. The post titles on the main blog page are links (and an h2), and the second selector takes care of that. The title on the single post page is not a link (and h1), and the first selector takes care of it.

Hi all,

I'm a newbie to CSS, as you'll be able to tell from my question. I'm trying to modify my post header font size and colour, so I've copied code directly from the tutorial examples. Modifying the background color & margins, padding, etc. work, but the only two things I want to change are the color (to make it black) and size (to make it smaller). But playing around with these parameters doesn't seem to have any effect. Can you please explain why or what I'm doing wrong?

My site is crunchcompass.com and the sample code I'm trying is:
h2 {
font-size: 1em;
}

There are no post sliders that allow you to set the time for the advancement of the featured posts. You can see a list of all the themes at WordPress.com that have post sliders here: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/features/post-slider/ In most themes with post sliders for featured posts vsitiors have to click to advance the slider to the next featured post. Here are some themes that have a featured post slider that automatically advances: Debut, Currents, On Demand, Modularity Lite, Sight. Note that last two are free themes.
