Most of the food bloggers I know have done their own tweaks to WordPress.org themes out of the box; given the thousands of themes available, you should be able to find one that'll work for you just fine. These bloggers have no trouble dominating search engines or being readable.

Custom web design is a lovely add-on, but it is SUCH a luxury item that it does not come cheap. The competent, talented people I know charge $65 an hour MINIMUM when they work for charities, and double that when they work for other companies. One of my friends charges $5000 per page.

You really don't need a web developer unless you're going to be doing something huge, with an audience in the tens of thousands daily or better.

Do you know how to self host or will you be paying someone to take over and handle all the technical problems? And keep in mind you get what you pay for. If the cost is that cheap, well then be aware of future problems.

Maybe check other well known food websites and see where they host. Maybe email them and ask about where they host and how much they pay.

For a food blog, pictures will be key. Which means bandwidth and paying for it. Unless you host the pictures elsewhere like Photobucket and pay their premium yearly fee where bandwidth is unlimited I believe.

If you just want to customize the template, then you can pay for the CSS upgrade. But first preview it before purchasing it.

Your site looks real nice because the pictures all add color and life to the blog. My only suggestion would be to limit the number of posts you have per page. Too many pictures and too many posts on the main page will suck the bandwidth and will be difficult for people with dial-up to load your page and they might leave. Maybe 5 posts per page.

Hi,

Basically I've been reading up on a few webpages about the differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com and it looks that if I want to heavily customise my site then I might have to move to WordPress.org? I've a few ideas for what I want the site to look like, and I don't think it can be acheived on a WordPress.com blog (although I could be wrong).

Before I make any drastic decisions just wanted to know if anyone on this forum knows any good, cheap developers for a food blogging site? Roughly how much are we talking an hour for example?

If not, has anyone got some tips on how to improve my site without moving?

You know the problem. You want to work on your wordpress theme offline, on your own personal copy of the blog; but you want to keep all the files in sync with your web site, and use the same database.

But wordpress insists on linking all the links back to your real, online blog. How to tell it to use the URL of your local blog locally, and your remote blog remotely?

Here's a hack to make wordpress pick up the URL for itself, every time!

open up
wp-includes/functions.php
and find the part which says:

/* Options functions */

function get_settings($setting) {

	global $wpdb;

	$value = wp_cache_get($setting, 'options');

	if ( false === $value ) {

 if ( defined('WP_INSTALLING') )

 $wpdb->hide_errors();

and change it to say this:

<br />
/* Options functions */

function get_settings($setting) {

	global $wpdb;

	$value = wp_cache_get($setting, 'options');

	/* Ben XO's siteurl hack */

	if( 'siteurl' == $setting or 'home' == $setting ) {

 $_REAL_SCRIPT_DIR = realpath(dirname($_SERVER['SCRIPT_FILENAME']));

 $_REAL_BASE_DIR = realpath(dirname(__FILE__).'/..');

 $_MY_PATH_PART = substr( $_REAL_SCRIPT_DIR, strlen($_REAL_BASE_DIR));

 $INSTALLATION_PATH = $_MY_PATH_PART

 ? substr( dirname($_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME']), 0, -strlen($_MY_PATH_PART) )

 : dirname($_SERVER['SCRIPT_NAME'])

 ;

 $value = 'http' . ($_SERVER['HTTPS'] ? 's' : '') . '://' . $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] . $INSTALLATION_PATH;

	}

	/* end Ben XO's siteurl hack */

	if ( false === $value ) {

 if ( defined('WP_INSTALLING') )

 $wpdb->hide_errors();

it uses a trick i posted on the PHP comments page, here:
