The screenshot you provided looks like it may have other custom CSS involved, and I based my previous reply on the Digg 3 Column demo site. Try deleting all the other CSS you had and just preview the changes I gave on a WordPress.com blog with Digg 3. That should work.

I can help you get started and give you some instructions when it comes to learning CSS.

This will hide the left sidebar in the Digg 3 theme:

.obar {
	display: none;
}

To find that selector, I right-clicked on the left sidebar and looked at the HTML until I found the top level element for the left sidebar. In this case it is:

<div class="obar">

And that's how I knew to use ".obar" as a class selector.

Then if you want to adjust the spacing to make the main column bigger, you could start with something like this:

.narrowcolumnwrapper,
.narrowcolumn,
.content {
	width: 692px;
}
.entry {
	max-width: 667px;

}

After that, you'll notice that the Digg 3 Column theme uses images as backgrounds on several wrapper elements to get a rounded corner affect. You can approximate the same thing using CSS with the "border-radius" property. Here is an example:

.narrowcolumnwrapper,
.narrowcolumn,
.content {
	background: none;
}
.narrowcolumnwrapper {
	border: 1px solid #bcbcbc;
	border-radius: 6px;
}

The Twitter Timeline is an embed that was designed to display in a space of at least 220px minimum. The Digg 3 Column theme is only 160px wide. You could try adjusting the "min-width" value for the timeline container, and that will help but note that some things inside the widget may overlap and there isn't a way to adjust those using CSS only. Here is an example you can try adding to your Appearance → Custom Design → CSS editor to see what I mean:

.twitter-timeline {
    min-width: 160px !important;
}

designsimply on "How to widen columns in Digg 3 Column"

One of the best ways to view CSS is to use your browser tools. Modern browsers have them built in and if your browser is up to date then you should be able to right-click an element and select the "Inspect Element" option to see the HTML for the item you clicked on as well as all of the CSS that applies to it. You can also find a link to the theme's CSS file on the Appearance → Custom Design → CSS editor page if you click "Edit" next to "Mode: Add-on" on the right.

The change you've asked for is actually a bit advanced because of the way the Digg 3 Column theme was designed using background images with set widths. To make adjustments to those set images, you would need to download them, recreate them at the sizes you want, re-upload them, and replace the proper reference for each one using custom CSS. That would take some work, and I could help guide you on how to get started. You would need to learn some CSS in order to do it. I know of a good tutorial in English which I will link below, but you might also want to look around for Dutch resources if you're serious about learning enough CSS to make advanced changes.
http://www.htmldog.com/guides/cssbeginner/

The background image behind the header image is one example of a set image width. Here is a link to the image so you can see what I mean:
http://s1.wp.com/wp-content/themes/pub/digg3/images/bg_header_overlay.png

There is a way to expand the width of the Digg 3 Column theme without editing images if you simply remove them. Here is an example I researched for you that shows how it would work:

#container,
#header,
#header-overlay,
#pagetitle,
.pagewrapper {
	width: 1204px;
}

.wrapper,
.narrowcolumnwrapper,
.narrowcolumn,
.content {
	width: 800px;
}

.entry {
	max-width: 775px;
}

.narrowcolumnwrapper,
.narrowcolumn,
.content,
#page {
	background: none;
}

#header-overlay img,
#header-image img {
	display: none;
}

#header-image {
	background: url('http://andijker.files.wordpress.com/2012/09/header0011.png') center repeat-x;
	border-radius: 8px;
	width: 1204px;
	height: 160px;
}

This example simply removes some of the background images and resets several of the widths. If you use this example you should also change the Content Width setting on your Appearance → Custom Design → CSS page to 775, or whatever value you use for ".entry" in the CSS example above.

I reviewed your site and found that you were able to change the color of the menu tabs in the Digg 3 Column theme with the following CSS:

#menu ul li {
background:url('http://patsytrench.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/bg_tab_right2.gif') no-repeat right top;
}

#menu ul li a {
background:url('http://patsytrench.files.wordpress.com/2011/10/bg_tab_left2.gif') no-repeat left top;
color:#fff;
}

#menu ul ul a {
background:#e78981;
width:150px;
}

Nice work!

I changed the colour of the header on my site and and have been trying to change the colour of the menu tabs on the top to match through Custom Design. However although it shows I've done this in preview when I go to the site not only has the colour not changed but the lines around the menu tabs have gone out of alignment. I've changed them back to the original for the time being while I try to sort out the problem. Any advice much appreciated.

To display posts with images in Digg 3, you need to copypaste the content of each post from the HTML editor into the Excerpt module of the editor.
If you're not seeing the Excerpt module while on the post editor screen, click Screen Options (top right) to activate it.

Or you can switch to a theme that displays full posts on category pages - see here which themes to avoid:

That is the way the theme is built. Some themes do that, some don't, but you can't change that short of changing themes as far as I know.

A user on italian forum complained about the thumbnails for images doesn't appear in category view but are present in home page.

see this: home page http://persbaglio.wordpress.com/ with images

category page: http://persbaglio.wordpress.com/category/ah-ah-ah/ with no images.

I didn't find any option to change this behavior. Is this a limitation - by design of the Digg 3 Column theme?

Digg is a little difficult. Give the following a try and see what I mean.

.pagewrapper {
border-left: 5px solid #CC0000;
border-right: 5px solid #CC0000;
}

Not how it stops? before the header image? If we add borders to the sides of the header element, it takes away from the open flow across the top where the background shows.
