Incorrect. Google owns Blogger and the avatars they use are not globally recognized Gravatars. Automattic owns both WordPress.com and Gavatar and every WordPress.com account is a Gravatar account so the Gravatars will display. http://gravatar.com/ Blogger avatars will not display on your blog.

I have the Settings > Discussion options set so avatars appear with comments but only those who comment using a WP account will have an avatar. I have it set to display the generic one when people don't have avatars but it displays for everyone, regardless. For example, someone commenting with a Blogger account should definitely have an avatar but it doesn't show up. I've tried switching it to the gravatar option but with that set it only shows the default Gravatar logo. Please help!

Now when I go onto the front page it says "Sorry, but you are looking for something that is not there." Is there a way to get the home page to show up as a home page? My guess is that if I send people to this they'll see that message and give up, though some will probably click on home.

All comment options are gone on the subsequent pages, but still showing up on Home.

Let's try and keep this simple. There is only one page you can post to in any blog and by default it's the front page of the blog.

This page > Settings > Discussion
Discussion settings is where you set up defaults for comments.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

We can also override the default settings and enable or disable future comments on any individual post or page.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/enable-disable-comments/

Note 1: By default, new blogs on WordPress.com will have the Discussion hidden. You can reveal it by clicking on Screen Options http://en.support.wordpress.com/screen-options/ on the top right corner of your Admin page, and checking the box that says Discussion so the module is included. http://en.support.wordpress.com/modules/#list-of-modules

If you want your blog's frontpage to be a static page, on your dashboard menu go to the Settings section -> Reading -> "Front page displays" -> click "Static Page" and choose on of your pages (you should probably create first a page called "Home" with the content from your Welcome post and choose it).

Edit Page -> scroll down to the "Discussion" box area and uncheck " Allow comments" -> click "Update" .
You can do this simultaneously for multiple pages by going on your dashboard menu -> Pages -> check the ones you want to edit -> go to "Bulk Actions" dropdown menu at the top -> choose "Edit" -> click "Apply". Also, the method for enabling/disabling comments on posts is the same, you'll just have to go to the Posts section instead of Pages. I would like the ability and the option to have a discussion with a reader on my blog beyond a comment or so on both our parts. Today, I noticed that after my reader/friend commented a second time, I could not reply to it directly. It was necessary for me to make a brand new comment, that did not post below the one it was in reply to. Is there some sort of setting or theme change I can make in order for longer discussion to be an option?

Why? I do not like e-mailing bloggers. Private messaging would be a great way for people to feel more connected to other bloggers, and give a sense of community.

Example: I wish to tell a blogger they made a huge error of spelling in the post. Do not wish to embarass them in the comments in public. Do not want to e-mail them, as I do not really know them at all.

So, the error goes, and noone comments, sees the error. Blogger has no idea why no stats or comments on the post.

Conclusion: Private messaging system would fix this problem. It could be in the notifications, on the button in the top right hand corner.

Many Bloggers are discussing the issue.

Rather have private messaging than the 'likes" function.

Best Regards,

Hello,

Since my blog functions mainly as a discussion forum, I've found that the Recent Comments widget is really helpful in letting readers know when someone has contributed to a discussion. But in my case, the widget usually fills up with pingbacks and my own comments--neither of which are as important as the actual readers' comments.

It seems to me that it would be helpful to include two additional options for the Recent Comments widget:

[Checkbox] Hide pingbacks

[Checkbox] Hide comments from authors

Thanks very much.
