The HTML of your blog includes these:

<title> TITLE HERE</title>
<meta name="application-name" content="TITLE HERE" />
<meta name="msapplication-tooltip" content="TAGLINE HERE" />

These don't change when you select the "No" option: only the CSS of the theme changes. So the blog title and tagline get hidden from viewers but not from search engines. WP wouldn't have added that option if it meant eliminate instead of don't display.

I've uploaded a graphic file to use as a header image, and it's got my site title and tag line as part of the bitmap.

On the Appearance / Header screen I have that image loaded and "Display Text" checked as "no" so I won't have two sets of texts.

I have the site name and tagline typed in the Settings / General screen.

I'd like to know if search engines can still access the site name and tagline I entered on the Settings / General screen, even though that text isn't displayed.

I'm using Fresh & Clear as the theme.

In general, if the blog title and tagline are overlaid on the header image, there is usually (but not always) an option to hide the text. In cases where the title and tagline are not overlaid on the header image, then there is typically not an option to hide the title and tagline text.

the "Site Title" under "General Settings" needs to be empty

Never ever remove the blog title from here > Settings > General or the search spider will NOT be able to index the content.

You can achive what you want by purchasing a CSS upgrade. If you have CSS editing experience, you can get the paid custom CSS upgrade and renew it annually. It will allow you to stylize the appearance of themes you find here > Appearance > Themes, but it does not allow you to change the functionality, by editing the underlying template. Also note that CSS is theme specific, so you cannot use the CSS stylesheets from other themes with the themes here at wordpress.COM.

Since there is no official Staff support for the CSS upgrade, and precious little Volunteer support, I recommend that you don’t buy the upgrade unless you have at least moderate understanding of HTML and CSS because you must be prepared to do the work on your own.

If you are considering purchasing the upgrade, you can go to Appearance > Edit CSS. There wordpress has provided a preview function where you can try before you buy.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-css/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/editing-css/

If you do purchase the upgrade be sure to read this article before starting your editing > http://csswiz.wordpress.com/2009/10/15/if-you-have-the-wp-com-css-upgrade/

Would you please add an option for the header text so that there's a choice to display the text or not -- and maybe be able to change the text colour as well? This would be a VERY useful set of options, especially since this is being used for the default theme.

If someone wants to use a header image that includes the blog title, having the default title above it looks strange. In order to not have the text show, then the "Site Title" under "General Settings" needs to be empty. But that causes only "blogname.wordpress.com" to appear at the top of the browser window. And I wonder . . . does it affect search engine visibility by not having a blog title in the settings?

Thanks for your help!
