In your dashboard while viewing the Edit Post/Page screen, you can click the Add Media button located above the editor.

Alternatively, you can upload supported filetypes by going to Media -> Add New in the left hand menu.

Since you're just starting, I'd also recommend going through Learn WordPress.com to get up to speed with using WordPress.

I am writing a blog with stories from my past, but don't know whether to upload stories as Word documents and place them on one page (forcing the reader to open a new document) or to add various new stories as 'pages' (will be hundreds eventually). If I did each one as a blog post, I couldn't re-order them in chronological order. I write them in non-chronological order. Should I put each story on a static page, or maybe I could create a table and place each story in there as they are written? I'm new to blogging, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a Category named 'University Club Forum'. When one clicks this category link, it displays a list of links - two to be exact. Each link is a PDF document that I uploaded. The problem is that it takes three additional clicks before the PDF document actually opens. Is this working as designed, or is this the limitation of the Vigilence theme that I'm using? I administer another blog using the Twenty Ten theme (http://ceclab.wordpress.com) and I don't have this problem.

Hello,
As suggested by the Happiness/Support Engineer, I am giving below the old and new file names. Both the names are in Unicode (Script = Devnagari Marathi, Language = Marathi, an Indian language spoken by about 110 million people).
1. OLD FILE NAME = अमृतमंथन_हिंदुस्थानी संगीताची आणि संस्कृतीची लाहोरी शोधकथा_ले० अंजली कीर्तने_101212
2. NEW FILE NAME = अमृतमंथन_लाहोरी शोधकथा_ले० अंजली कीर्तने_101212
Whenever I tried to upload the pdf file with the old name, in the upload dialogue box also it showed file name as just 'pdf'. Thereafter whenever one tried to open the file in the article by clicking on the link in the article, it just downloaded the file without opening it. Later when I noticed the short name 'pdf' in place of the complete name, I suspected that it had to do something with the name. So I tried giving a shorter name, which worked.
You may check out the article at the following link.
http://wp.me/pzBjo-zF
I hope this information would enable you to detect the bug and rectify it. If you need any more information, please do let me know.
Thank you very much.
Warm regards,

Finally I got it !! It worked OK with the same file when I reduced the length of the name of the pdf file. The name was in a unicode based non-English language. So it generally takes more characters of memory storage than English. And when the name itself was long in that language, it must be exceeding the internal character limit set by the wordpress software specs. It worked only when I cut the length of the name short. This can be a bug. You may please experiment and confirm. Thanks to all of you, who spent precious time trying to help me. May God bless you !!

Generally though this is a browser setting. Do you have the adobe reader plugin installed in your browser? Usually if you do, then when you click on the file it will open within the browser using the plugin. They always do for me.

Yes, it's easy. You upload the .doc or .pdf file using your media uploader, just as if it were a picture. Then you copy the link to the file you've just uploaded, highlight some text in your post, like

"Click here to download this file"

hit the link icon, and when the box pops up asking for the URL, you put in the URL of the file. It sounds more complicated than it is.

You can anchor it on text (as above) or add a picture and add the link to the picture. Just remember; the picture has to be uploaded separately, because .doc and .pdf files won't show as images on a WP.com blog.

1) If the blog is set to private, then you are the one to add users. Users will have to sign up for a wordpress.com account (they don't need to get a blog).

2) A forum cannot be added directly, but what a lot of people do is to get a free forum from one of the online services and then link to it from within the blog.

3) You can create links in posts, pages, or in a text widget in the sidebar and then link to those documents at Google.

4) In general, all pages are going to reflect the same theme, but there are a couple themes that have a "no-sidebar" page template (which makes them look different), and with the new twenty ten theme, you can actually have a different header image for each page if you wish.

Hello,

I want to be able to click on a word or phrase in my post and have a .pdf or .doc file come up on the computer. I have uploaded the files to the media library, but am unsure how to connect the specific file to a specific word or phrase in my post. Help please?

So, you can upload them all at once into the Media Library. It's just that when you insert them into a post or page so that people can access them, you will need to insert links to them one at a time. You cannot upload and insert them to different posts all in one step.
