I would probably buy the new domain name and point it to the blog you want it to go to - then change the mapping for the existing domain name to the new blog - you can have more than one domain name mapped to the same blog so that is not an issue - you can only have one "Primary" domain name per web site / blog (the name visitors see in their browser address bar)

Although athomewithrebecka.com has been registered, it is not using WordPress.com nameservers. If your domain is mapped to a self-hosted site, then your configuration may be fine as currently set up.

Yes - the change is seamless - all the old bookmarks will still work

The Reader should be fine also

I think the avatar will be fine since I think they are tied to your email -

You will see a bit of a drop in search engine traffic for a few months (maybe 2 or 3) as search engines get used to the new name - but the old name will also work so nobody will get lost

Reading the instructions in the article it looks like they have now made deleting the old address optional, and given you the option of buying the site redirect upgrade. I haven't tried it myself though!

I recommend instead simply creating a new blog from Manage My Blogs and then setting the old one to Private. Your domain is already mapped here with WordPress.com, as it needs to be. Everything here is setup correctly.

There are two things that are incorrect about the current situation:

  1. The domain has expired with 123-reg.
  2. Because the domain has expired, the nameservers (which point the domain at your site with WordPress.com) are not the correct ones.

To fix this, you will need to contact 123-reg and renew your domain. Once you have done so, you will need to point your nameservers to WordPress.com's nameservers, which I included in my original post. The folks at 123-reg should be able to help you out with how to do that!
