Then how do people visiting my blog see my profile? There is not apparent link to it on the blog itself and when I did cut and paste that profile to the About section I got a whole new Blog posting -- not what I was looking for. I want my readers to see my profile and I just don't know how to do that...

The profile data you enter here > Users > My Profile in the "About you" section will not be auto-posted to your About page. If you want it to appear on that Pages then you will have to copy and paste it. To edit the About page and update it see http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/edit-pages-screen/

In only a few themes that data is displayed in an author profile which appears at the end of each post. http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/08/15/author-displayed-or-not/

Yes you can delete the placeholder Hello World post. When you do a 404 (page not found) error message will appear http://en.support.wordpress.com/not-found/ but as soon as you publish a post, not a page it will disappear.
http://http//en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

Yes you can create a custom menu and not include the About page in it.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
Or you can edit the About page and update it.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/edit-pages-screen/
Static pages are not a requirement for blogs I do recommend having an About page. I always amazed when I visit a blog and don’t find one because it’s natural for visitors to want to know a bit about who you are and why you are blogging. http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2011/04/06/why-about-pages-are-essential/

On the bottom of your Admin page you will find a link to the Learn WordPress.com blogging Tutorial prepared by Staff. http://learn.wordpress.com/
The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page.

I am new to blogging and the intent of my blog is to share my story of a recent event. At this time, I want the blog to be for this event only. In signing on I receive a Hello World post? Can this be put in to "trash" so that the post I am writing but have not yet posted is what people see first?

Also, on my post (draft version) there is a tab called About. Is this always with blogs? Can it be removed or do I updated this info.

I feel a little like an idiot, but somehow I can't figure out how to edit the little Me blurb on the side. The template is Coraline, but I'm not sure that makes a difference. Any push in the right direction is hugely appreciated.
