2. Any followers from connected Publicize services (Facebook, Twitter, Messenger Connect, Yahoo!, or LinkedIn), which you can enable in Settings -> Sharing

Your site stats page displays how many followers you have, who your followers are, as well as how many people are subscribed to post comments on your site.

Dashboard > Site stats > Total, 'Followers' , Shares

So now I know, because I had decided to stop 'sharing via twitter' and turned it off via the 'Sharing' page, and followers dropped to 75 that's the total of my actual WordPress Followers and Tumblr Followers, so there you go.. for any one with a similar query, I've added all this and then will mark as 'resolved'..

It's not quite the seamless interface for your users that you're looking for, but you may be able to mitigate that by posting about the feature (and perhaps picking up some more followers in the process!) and then sending out your invite.
