I just updated Firefox to the latest version, and the audio player is back again on all of the pages. Not sure why this would fix it, but at least it's working again. Thank you so much for your patience and support!

Perhaps try temporarily disabling any system-wide security, ad blocking, or firewall software?

Why would the configuration issue affect only part of the site though,
and be the same with two different computers? I am not sure how to fix this, but thank you for looking into it.

Hm, we definitely see the Flash player in Firefox ourselves, so I can't think of anything else besides maybe just a configuration issue on your end.

I tried again with add-ons and extensions disabled, and still there are download links where the audio player should be. I do see the flash player on the page you linked to, and I also see it on the home page of my site. This is also what I see using another computer, a new laptop.

@macnanx, thanks for your response. I updated Flash, and
the problem persists in Firefox. Also tried it with another
computer and it is the same, there is just a download link for the audio files. I don't understand why the flash player would appear on the home page and not on any others, and it seems to work in all the other browsers. Any suggestions?

Out of interest (and I'm afraid I am not a techy) could someone explain why an audio player is a security risk ?

I'd rather not, as other sites could still be using the player (it's a very common audio player) in an exploitable way.

On the home page of my site, the audio player is back, but on all of the other pages, there is still just a download link.

Is http://picturesofinfinity.net/star-sounds/ one of the pages where you're seeing just the download link?

Thank you for all of the information on this thread, and for keeping us posted about why the audio player had disappeared.
I have a question about what I am experiencing now.
On the home page of my site, the audio player is back, but on all of the other pages, there is still just a download link. Is there anything I can do to fix this, or will it be resolved in time?

Just saw that it's working again. Great! I'll be sleeping a little better tonight again ;-)
Seriously, my thanks to Macmanx and whoever helped solve this. I am really grateful for WordPress taking not just some security issue, but also the worries of us customers seriously.

We do not publish details regarding security vulnerabilities, because that would negate the whole point. For example, "Someone could infect your viewers' computer by doing this," and then someone does just that. (Note, this specific example is not the case here.)

Or is all this just an excuse to cover up for some dumb HTML5 experiment that - at the cost of the customers - went terribly wrong?

HTML5 audio fallback has been in place for over a year and has always functioned when Flash is disabled or not installed on the viewer's browser (a growing percentage of WordPress.com blog viewers).

Of course I understand that there can be no exact planning in this case, but what is the global time outlook? Is this going to be a matter of days? Or weeks? Or maybe even months?

A matter of days or less. We are very invested in protecting the security of your blog and your readers, and we will not be carelessly rushing the process.

Well, I haven't seen any indication that there is a solution yet. But OK, I've got my site plastered up now with apologies to the users for the music not working. Fine. I really like that. Wow!
Obviously, we all are entitled to a little more information here. Why are we kept completely in the dark and being served only vague generalities here?
Two main questions remain completely unanswered:
