I would prefer it if you didn't have to right click to download, I just want it to download when you click on the image or a button that says download. Is this possible with wordpress.com or would it be a wordpress.org function?

It's easy. You just need to add the instructions "Right click, save as to download."

Hi all, thank you so much for your help. With your suggestions I have managed to add a jpg file to a post along with a click here to download but it then takes you to another browser displaying the image rather than downloading to the users computer, I'm not sure if it is even possible to do this on wordpress.com so let me know if I'm trying to do something too advanced.

You're right raincoaster, plugins don't work here, i slipped reading the ".com" in two posts actually, had reached here from some search results. Phew!.. My bad, the guru's safe :)

Secondly about SlideShare being better for SEO, was just compared to Scribd or GDocs (mentioned by timethief). Of course, hosting your file yourself gives you much better control over SEO and hence a better result.

Uh, no. Plugins cannot be used at WordPress.com. And Slideshare has far less SEO than hosting the document yourself. Where are you getting your information? Fire your guru.

Just upload the whatever-it-is, and put it in your blog as a Thumbnail or text "Download" or whatever with a link to the full size file.

WordPress Download Manager Plugin

Can't say I've understood your end goal here, but if you want to manage, track and control file downloads from your wordpress site, this is the plugin/functionality you're looking for.

If we're talking about document embedding services you can use SlideShare as well, it's better for your website's SEO as far as I know.

As of now, I'm painstakingly drawing these things up on Excel, capturing a screen shot of it, sizing it how I'd like and inserting as a JPEG into the post.

FTP access and plugins are only for VIP bloggers http://vip.wordpress.com/our-services/ or for those with WordPress.ORG installs. This is not new. It's the way it's always been.

There is no FTP access to our free hosted WordPress.com blogs and we cannot install plugins. If you must have plugins then you have to hire a web host and set up your own WordPress.org install. Read the comparison here please > http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

I'm not sure why it's not automatically in there (if it is, I'm having a hell of a time finding it)...but why isn't TablePress or something similar for creating charts, etc. an automatic plugin on WordPress? The blog I need help with is all baseball, all the time and it would be nice for us to be able to rank players, teams, etc. with the help of a chart. I have a table created in excel which I want to put into a page on my blog. when I copy and paste the table it comes up ok but it is just text with no boxes so it looks confusing, how do I get the boxes around the text to appear?

Yesterday I uploaded a pdf file which I incorporated into the image on the left side of the post (http://artfiks.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/artfiks-je-tu/)
Everything was working fine till now. Some of my readers were complaining that they only saw the image when they clicked on it. When I tried to open the pdf file a few minutes ago (by clicking on the image), everything seemed fine at first, but then I noticed that some of the fonts are not shown correctly and some of the letters are missing. The same thing happened when I opened the pdf file in my library.

What could be the problem? My browser? The uploaded content?

Hello,

My company wants to use a WordPress blog for business purposes. However, as a real estate company, it would be great if we could show floor plans in our blog entries. Floorplanner has an option to allow us to embed their floorplans on other websites, but it doesn't seem that WordPress supports that option. We really like WordPress and would hate to have to switch to another blogging platform, so we were wondering if anything could be done about it.

If you are seeking to simply upload a document to your blog’s Media Library (no download link), you can check out Media -> Add New in your dashboard. http://support.wordpress.com/media/media-add-new/

We assign Categories only to Posts, not to Pages. Until a post is published with a Category assigned to it that Category will have nothing to display in a Categories widget.
