I wanted to embed a slideshow into a page on my blog, and I tried the giga short code mentioned in other forum discussions, and it worked the other day.

Then randomly, it stopped working today. All I have is a black box where the slideshow is supposed to be:

exploringeresources.wordpress.com/test-page-2

Was something changed in WordPress over the past day?

Several people recommended making sure the "auto embed" option is clicked, but I cannot find it any where in my dashboard. (It used to be under the settings > media, but it's no longer there).

Thanks in advance for your help.

Wow, thanks! I still have much to learn, it seems.
I hadn't even considered the flash issue on iOS thingies, checking now I see the gaping holes I already have on my site when I look at it from an iPhone. D'oh!
YouTube does work though, so that's something at least.
Maybe in the end I'll just make my landing page a (nearly) full screen youtube video and be a little more realistic about my options with my current limited CSS understanding.

Thanks again!
Anne-Marie

You can't directly put a soundcloud player or a youtube video into a text widget. You have to use the gigya shortcode to do this, and the gigya shortcode is not officially supported which means it could go away at anytime.

Second issue. With normal embeds of youtube or soundcloud I expect they have both taken care of the "no-flash" issue on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches so that their stuff will still work, but I don't know if that is the case when using the gigya shortcode. If it does not, then a good number of people going to your site will just see a gaping blank spot where the soundcloud player or youtube video should be.

With some CSS tricks, a widget can be moved up and into the header area on virtually all themes here. How much work that will be depends on the theme and how much stuff would need to be moved around.

The other issue with the youtube video is that most of the embeds (maximum offered) are not as wide as a typical theme so that means it could look a little funny sitting up there being narrower than the main part of the theme.

Those are a few of the things you need to ponder.

Hello!
I'm new to CSS, and have yet to upgrade, because I wanted to find out if (or how) it's possible to do what I'm envisioning first on http://annemariesanderson.com/

At the top of my pages I'd like to have a soundcloud player and/or a youtube video embedded (at the moment I've just made a static landing page as a substitute, but ideally I'd like the media to be up top on a fixed header, and the blog to be available for browsing simultaneously). From what I've read so far, that could be done with a text widget, but as far as I've been able to find out so far, the only theme available that has a header widget space is Clean Home. Do I have to use that theme to put my embedded media at the top of my page? Or is there a way to put widget space there on different themes? Or should I be thinking about doing it in a completely different way?

Thanks in advance!
Anne-Marie
