I am using the ‘Twenty Ten’ wordpress theme, and I would like my comments to appear in a hierarchical form, that is have the response to a comment appear as a ‘sub-comment’ rather than a new comment as it does now.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

See here > Settings > Discussion

4. Enable threaded (nested) comments __ levels deep- Turn on this option to allow visitors to reply to other comments inline/nested. When turned on it can allow for better discussions and responses. We suggest using a maximum of 3 levels deep. Anything higher and the theme layouts may not work as expected. Note: Enabling the setting only applies to new comments since existing comments don’t have any threading date. However, disabling this setting applies to all comments. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/

I wonder if someone can make a suggestion for me... I would like the ability and the option to have a discussion with a reader on my blog beyond a comment or so on both our parts. Today, I noticed that after my reader/friend commented a second time, I could not reply to it directly. It was necessary for me to make a brand new comment, that did not post below the one it was in reply to. Is there some sort of setting or theme change I can make in order for longer discussion to be an option?
